Should I use an ONT then use any TPLink Dual Band router for better coverage or should I continue using my gpon router?
This is what my setup is in my home.

BSNL Wifi router on first floor and a TPLink router on the second floor. Obviously, the TPLink router has better range. If you have only one floor, prefer the TPLink router.

My plan is the basic Rs. 500 for 40 mbps plan.

Just for basic browsing na?
My use case is for Steam downloading, browsing and emails etc.
My downloads don't actually exceed 1000GB at the most every month if I play games.
Nowadays not playing games much but when I do I want it to download continuously and fastly but steam downloads continues with up and downs sometimes and sometimes at break neck speed. Then it goes down to zero then again goes up likewise it downloads but browsing is okay.

I am using BSNL Netlink Dual Band GPON router for my 150Mbps plan @ ₹ 943 including GST.

Should I use an ONT then use any TPLink Dual Band router for better coverage or should I continue using my gpon router?

This is the router I use which I got in Hyderabad while getting BSNL FTTH:*netlinkict.com/shop/gpon-ont/gpon-ont-2ge1potsac-wifi/netlink-gpon-ont-2ge1potsac-wifi-hg323dac/

BTW what plans all of you are having in other states?
I now shifted to Anupuram, Chengalpattu Dist of TN and here BSNL FTTH plans are very costly and since there is no other option as I stay in a govt township I have to use BSNL FTTH only for now.

How should I setup Google or cloudfare dns in my router settings?
Please provide any walkthrough or guide as to how to do it for my GPON router. Thanks.

Is the current ONT Router locked? If your router is locked by ISP (or does not have enough features) and you want better control then put it in Bridge Mode (You might need to involve ISP for that) and front end WAN with your own Ethernet router that gives you good control. It may or may not change coverage much.

Alternatively if you want the network to reach further, connect another router to this in AP mode (Access Point) mode. However since WAN and ISP side is still handled by ONT Router you will get longer range but not much control.

By Control I mean - Ability to setup WAN, IP, DDNS, DNS, DHCP, Port forwarding, WMM, bandwidth etc etc and many more features that might be locked or some may not be present in your ISP provided router.
Some ISP routers (like in case of Tata fiber) have a separate super admin or admin password that unlocks such features.
