I think I wrote specifically about retail units,not demos.
Have you seen butterfly/One and Z/ZL side by side yourself?The panel used by htc is clearly better than Z/ZL(RETAIL UNITS NOT DEMO!)
Z/ZL screen is not bad per se but when compared to butterfly/One,it is obvious htc used a better panel(which is anything but over saturated!)

Yes I've seen both and they look same head on and for your kind info,90% Z/ZL use the same panel as HTC Butterfly and have same contrast ratio as well. You can check the panel ID on both since you appear to have access to both Z and Butterfly. And compared to Z the Butterfly is definitely over saturated. Same with the One.

If you want you can increase saturation with the Z's calibration app. Also white balance needs to be adjusted for the UI to look as good and black taskbar and buttons instead of Grey.

And where did you see a retail Z and Butterfly side by side ?

Right in my office mate!And I hope Sony is not selling demo units to the customers because they(butterfly and ZL) DO NOT look same head on!
If they are using the same panel,Sony is doing something horribly wrong!

Then it must be a JDC panel. Early Z batches used Sharp and JDC panels. Those Zs with JDC panels have inferior quality compared to Sharp panels.

I assume your mate bought it in first week of launch in India ?

The new batches (Manufactured March onwards) use Sharp panels only.

BTW if your mate is okay with rooting he can install the calibration app and improve the screen a bit. OR else wait for 4.2.2 update. It will be included

She bought the ZL in last week of March,not rooted yet,will check this weekend.However in all probability it isn't JDC.
Brian Klug at anandtech wrote htc One may have JDC panels(the review sample he received) and according to him it is the BEST panel he has seen till date,and I trust his opinion.
So JDC does not necessarily mean bad quality panel.

HTC One has a JDI panel = manufactured by Sony.

Z/ZL have JDC panel = Toshiba panel.

So they are not the same.

And I never said JDC panels = bad. Just that the JDC panels used in the early Z batches are lower quality. Newer JDC panels are also good.

But that means you have to format it to FAT32, which is an archaic file system- which means storing HD movies will be a PITA (you will have to split the file). ZL OTOH supports SDXC in exFAT.

Both Z and ZL support 64GB cards in FAT32 format ONLY. With a simple mod both can support 64GB with exFAT file system but not by default.

Well i am not really interested in htc one.. Just coz i feel its ovrpriced..just like butterfly..
i really like optimus g..but its already outdated compared to z/zl..
I took a demo for xperia z few days back.. I liked it overall but just that the sound thru hp was not loud enough.. It was very quiety type.. compared to my iphone4...and i was not even using the sony hp.. I was using my own logitech ue350vi hp. I wonder if there was any problem or xperia z is only that loud.. I faced the same problem with my friends xperia s.. The volume is so low that i felt like i was listening at 50%volume. Is there anything that can be done abt it.. Coz i thnk that is the only thng stoppin me frm buyin z/zl.

Yes you can remedy that by using this simple mod. It will make the sound super loud and it even makes calls and loudspeaker much louder :)

Japan display Inc is the merger of Sony Mobile Displays, Toshiba Mobile Displays and Hitachi Mobile Displays. The merger was completed only 2 days back and now on all JDI panels will be marked as "JDI". But so far though they were merged on paper, physically they still functioned independently.

JDC was the code for Toshiba Panels (Japan Display Central)
JDI was the code for Sony panels ( JDI West)

In fact right from sensation, HTC has been using Sony panels on select batches ( SLCD , SLCD2, SLCD3) Some Butterfly units also use Sony panel.

That info is present in Wiki,however Sony's contribution is only 10%...and even the Sharp panel used in Z/ZL is clearly inferior to JDI panel of Butterfly.
Moreover in Q2 of 2010,htc started using SLCD for Desire(shortage of AMOLED pAnels) and those are sourced from company jointly owned by Samsung and Sony(as usual Samsung was the much bigger contributor)

Did you even check what panel is in your mate's ZL ? Check first and then make that statement.

And did you even read the article on JDI ? I don't think as if you had read it, you wouldn't make such a silly statement.

70% shares are of the Japanese Government, that's just money and not a display division. Is that so tough to understand ? Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba own 10% each but actual divisions belong to them. The entire business was divided into threee - JDI W, JDC, JDI E.

Well, randomuser got me right regarding optimus g being outdated...
in fact i really liked the optimus g but just coz of the screen res i decided to go for z/zl..
@randomuser111: Well i am really inclined towards zl coz of the IR blaster and the physical camera button...
Do you think z is better than zl aprt frm the fact that its water resistant.

^^I think I can read english,and secondly you better check your beloved Z/ZL's display against Butterfly or One as I have seen them many times already and there should not be any confusion regarding quality of the displays.
