Hey! I'm thinking of upgrading my stock HP Pavilion dv6 6165tx. I have a few questions:
RAM:
Currently 4GB, I'm thinking of adding another 4GB, which one do you recommend?
Anyone with a 1333MHz frequency will do. Go for Corsair/Transcend.
SSD:
From what I've read on this and HP's forum, Samsung Evo 840 is good. But both
d3b and
swiftshashi had reported problems with their HDD after putting it in the caddy in place of the ODD. On an HP forum,
swiftshashi mentioned putting the SSD in place of the ODD in order to prevent this. Can anyone confirm that this works? It won't damage the SSD, right?
No damage to SSD after 9 months. Yes,the Hard disk was changed twice after that, but the latest one is working flawlessly even after two months of use. Catch is-Put SSD in place caddy, and interchange the mSATA wires. Also, please uninstall HP 3D Driveguard software,as it seems to unnecessarily disturbs HDD.
OS:
I'm currently on Windows 7 Professional, and quite happy. But I've read on this forum that Windows 8 is better for SSDs, having TRIM support and other features. Is an OS upgrade recommended?
Hell Yes !!! You'll love it.
BATTERY:
My battery life is very poor, lasts for ~ 1 hour. But I'm usually on AC power, so not too bothered. How good is a battery replacement/upgrade? (6 cell to 9 cell, maybe)
Now a days,a new MU-06 Ultra branded battery is being shipped by HP,comes for about 3.8k and has 3 years warranty on it. HP guarantees good battery life with that.Since my original battery still gives me more than 4 hours of backup when reading/surfing,I have no reason to try it out. But my friend got one recently, and he is more than happy with it.
HEATING:
My laptop does heat up, quite a lot. I would like to clean it's fan and heat sink, any advice on the same? Or should I have it serviced for this? (I still have ~6 months of warranty)
Yes,get it cleaned. Infact, tell them that you are getting 90B error, and you'll get a new heatsink. Also apply good pastes like AS5 or ceramique 2 just the way they are recommended. My almost 3 yr old dv6 6121tx never crosses 50'C mark even in this heat under normal load.
Btw, has anyone tried Hackintosh on their laptops? Even if not, can you confirm whether my laptop uses SATA in AHCI mode? (as opposed to IDE/RAID)
Yes,it uses SATA in AHCI mode(as shown by my Samsung Magician Software(SSD)
Lastly, is an upgrade recommended for a ~2.5 year old laptop? I've never had any (major or hardware related) trouble with it so far, but should I wait for sometime and buy a new laptop instead of upgrading? (Get a full HD screen maybe)
Depends on your usage actually. Never found a reason to upgrade it after SSD+Win 8.1 Upgrade.Runs any app/games without a glitch for me.JFYI,I also have a newly purchased ENVY 15 j133tx,currently in use as a desktop replacement with mind blowing looks and specs, but with a SSD,my dv6 is way faster in day to day usage.
This has been a good forum when looking for information, ever since I bought my laptop.
Keep up the good work!
