It really doesn't matter which OS you use as in the end you are trying to become "bond in *nix". But whicheva OS u use, I suggest you shud stick to it and not waste time in distro hoping, and perfecting your installing, uninstalling "eye candy, codec pack" kind of things again n again.
But yes, since its RHCE it wud be helpful if you use fedora or CENTOS. I never tried CentOS but IMO fedora is just perfect for practicing it out. U may check CentOS and give ur feedback though.
Also, don't undermine "terminology and procedures". The study material is perfect and u might learn a lot of things from it for your own practical use.
It consists of two parts : The Course and the Exam. Both have their own separate fee. So, If u really want to study it all, then I suggest you shud take the course, practice it and then give the exam any time u want.
