It really doesn't matter which OS you use as in the end you are trying to become "bond in *nix". But whicheva OS u use, I suggest you shud stick to it and not waste time in distro hoping, and perfecting your installing, uninstalling "eye candy, codec pack" kind of things again n again.

But yes, since its RHCE it wud be helpful if you use fedora or CENTOS. I never tried CentOS but IMO fedora is just perfect for practicing it out. U may check CentOS and give ur feedback though.

Also, don't undermine "terminology and procedures". The study material is perfect and u might learn a lot of things from it for your own practical use.

It consists of two parts : The Course and the Exam. Both have their own separate fee. So, If u really want to study it all, then I suggest you shud take the course, practice it and then give the exam any time u want.

You have to go to RHCE center and apply for the course, of course!
U get 3 books and of course, an elegant Redhat cap + bag. :D

@damngoodman : Sharing the material and paper, AFAIK, can revoke ur certification number. So be cautious while sharing.

Wait a sec, I thought Rs. 12,000 was for examination fees ?
Does this 12000 include BOTH examination charges and course material charges ?

And till I buy it, what software do I learn ? You guys keep saying its about server maintaining and stuff like that, but WHAT do I actually do to practice before the exam other than learning to configure CentOS by commandline ?

To prep for the exam u need access to a machine having Redhat Enterprise linux Server OS connected to a LAN. The LAN may provide necessary Services (such as DHCP, DNS).

Then u shud use ur brainsauce to figure out how to solve the 1 st question of the exam, i.e how to login when the system get ****ed up :)

the EL5 linux is study of server and client architecture , u should really need the server machine and client machine to learn from home

Server Client architecture - do you mean I need TWO computers to study this ?

my buddy who did the exam along with me actually failed to solve the first problem, i.e he failed 2 troubleshoot the "login" problem. Consequently he couldn't tackle the rest of the questions. And the swankly dressed external exams guy politely told him to to vacate his a$$ out of the premises.

@MHG : You asked bt course. So course is for 12000/- and exam is also for 12000/-. So the total fee is 24000/- only. U get a redhat CD for "free", wateva that means! And stay cool man, don't be so worried. :oops:

i did the eligibility round with trouble shooting with in 15 min /-

trouble shooting 5 min --> all three stage they made error /fstab & grub.conf & initrd image file removed

OK. Is the course study-center based or self-learning type ?
If its the self learning type, can I study using some matierial from the internet ?
Are there any free courseware available ?
I am asking because I know places where they take crash courses for RHCE for LESS than 12K.
Thats pretty amusing considering the fact that official course costs more.

Red Hat Enterprise Linux is a paid software. But it costs usually upwards of 6K (for basic limited license) and is usually well over 12K and can reach 50K too. But thats all because it has special technical support and maintainance service for a certain number of years and this is valued by customers who are usually non-technical institutions.

So the CD being "free" has little or no meaning and is just a gimmik because YOU are the one who troubleshoots the OS for the exam :D

WHAT ?

Thats great. I had solved similar problem in my friend's "partial install" of DreamLinux. FSTAB was the default empty file while kernel needed to be changed.

They don't screw up your configuration files right ?

Its study-centre based and u shud opt for a centre listed in the link I gave. Bargain if u have to, but only on the listed centres.
