1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that)
A:Mainly for watching Movies , but also play the occasionsal game at low/moderate Ssettings.

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM/ sellers? If not- why?
A: Yes of course.

3. What is your MAX budget?
A: Rs.50,000

4. Planning to overclock?
A:No never.

5. Which OS are you planning to use?
A: Windows 7 64Bit

6. How much hard drive space is needed?
A: 2 TB Minimum and plan to increase very soon.

7. What resolution will the screen run at & whats the size of the screen you want?
A: 24" 1080p ,but may consider 22" because 22" is quite cheaper than 24".

8. How would you rate your hardware knowledge from the count of 1-10? (1 being the lowest, 5 being you are somewhat in sync with the current performers and 10 being the highest)
A: 9

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
A: Yes i have but just once so i will get it done by an assembler :)

10. When are you planning to buy the system?
A: Around New Year.

11. Are you one of the types looking out for "future proof" configurations?
A: Atleast the Non Upgradable Parts like Processor/Mobo should be somewhat future proof.

12. Are there going to be any components that you don't want to include in this new rig? If yes, do mention.
A: Not really.

13. Which city do you live in and are you open to buying from shops from other city/states?
A: Kolkata , and yes I will buy from Chadni Chowk.

14. Mention any other points if deemed necessary
A: My PC will be running 24x7 , and Hard Disk will be in constant use , so my system should not have high heat producing components , i would rather but moderate config so that it can run all the tim without problem.

And by ideal i do not mean the most Eco Friendly Low Power Low Config machine. I need something which can atleast handle games at moderate/Low Settings.

The PC should have such components which generate really less heat , will be good enough for running 24x7 for days/months at a stretch , it won't be CPU Intensive all the time , but the Hard Disk will be in use all the time [ I share my stuff on our College Internal LAN DC++ Network ] , so that will be something to be extra careful while picking.

My Budget is around 50k, my priorities are , Cool machine suited for running long hours , Good Video watching , moderate/low gaming [ just the regular FIFA and Counter Strike , nothing intensive ].

Here's what i listed would be suitable to my needs and within my budget

Edit : 08.12.10 - The list is almost final , just not sure about the Graphics Card.

In my opinion don't go for 5750.Instead look for 5770 which is only 1k more than 5750 & much better in gaming.

idle TDP for HD 5770 is better than that of GTS 450, it is 11W. And for full HD gaming, I think HD 5770 is minimum.

@op

For your requirements, a 5670 will be more than enough. Its gonna consume even less power, doesn't require an external power connector and won't heat up if left 24/7.

Much better option for your requirements cause you won't be gaming heavily.

Looking at your main requirement for movies and some gaming,
i3 530/540 - 5K approx
ASUS P7H55 - 5.5K approx (ATX, EPU for power saving, ...)
2x 2GB DDR3 1333MHz Corsair - 3.4K approx
500GB Seagate 7200.12 - 1.8K approx
2TB Seagate LP - 5K approx (for storage)
DVD writer - 1K approx
Corsair CX400 PSU - 2.7K approx (/ VX450 - 3.7K approx)
NZXT Gamma - 2.1K approx
HD5670 1GB DDR3 - 5.5K-6K approx (/ HD5770 - 8.5K approx)
22" 1080p LCD - 8K approx
Total- 40K approx
You should try and get a decent 23"/24" LCD monitor for movies.
(A 5670 may be ok for your needs if you game at lower resolution- plus it will draw less power and run cool too)
Please do get some good speakers too.

U2311 would be the best as monitor, lower power consumption better display. for running OS do not use 2 TB HDD. if you have any old HDD of less than 500 GB put it in. and have you to buy OS as well if yes is it in the 50 K budget.
for ram buy single chip of 4GB if you are interested in keeping your rig for 3-4 years, if less then you can use 2GB RAM chips also
monitor are the worst in going caput quickly so a decent monitor like Dell U2311 is must IMO
yeah HD5670 is good GPU, but you said you will buy around new year. hence wait and watch if lower end 6xxx series of ati gfx card come in

A roomy and airy cabinet and an awesome monitor.
2TB space as you need and that graphic card can play games at med-high.

6850 will be too power hungry for a 24/7 running system . Not recommended for a download rig.

Putting a poweful AMD graphics card in a 24X7 system does not mean yo make it power hungry. All the 5000 series cards are having very low power consumption in idle condition. In case of HD 6850 it is 19W only. It will require much power only in time of gaming. So @ 50K budget obviously 6850 is a strong contender.
Same thing for AMD quad cores also. Yes their power consumption at idle state is slightly higher than Intel i5s and i3s, but that is not at all huge. when you are not doing anything heavy the power CPu will automatically reduce its clock speed to normally 800 MHz. You can use the AMD fusion utility to have much control over the CPU power consumption.

^^+1 for the 6850. and thats why i mentioned it in my suggestion..and even cool and quiet can be used.

@op choosing b/w i3 540 and 640 is your choice as cool and quiet will also reduce power consumption of 640 but as your budget permits go for 6850. see this for example - MSI Radeon HD 6850 review, idle wattage just 19w for gpu. combinng with a 5670 and 24" screen you will have to lower the settings to play at 1080p. 6850 is very cool, dont worry. the cabinet i mentioned NZXT GAMMA is also very airy one.

you can look at the LED DELL ST2220L 22" @ 8.7k
