yup I am done with all the basic 8 chords . Can switch between them easily . Have already learned 3-5 songs ( three little bird , chasing cars easy version , Mad world etc) . Also when is the good time to start learning power chords ?

Just few months more to play Green days song , cant wait :D

I am just a newbie :D , though desmond , faun , gollum , nanducop , bikramjitkar are probably the only one here who play guitar regularly .
I play everyday thanks to rocksmith
plus I do finger practice exercises everyday before going to work. for some strange reason my typing spree has also improved lol

How many strings we should touch with the pick for upstrumming ?

That depends on the song. But, normally. I just pick bottom 3-4 for few songs.

It's not about strumming all strings. Listen with you ears and see that it should sound melodious, not a harsh cacophony, and closer to the song which you are playing (if you are). And the force with which you strum matters too. There are song where few strokes are loud and others in between a bit mellow.

If you are a beginner, don't worry about what strings you strum. Its more important how you hold the chords and that all the strings that you have fret sound proper.

That being said, there are specific strings that are "not included" in some chords (ex. in the D chord, the low E string is not supposed to be played). However, you could get to these once you get familiar with holding the chord patterns first.

Thanks . I have learned all open chord and can switch between them easily ( 60+ change per minute for each pair) . Also i am done with 7th dominant chord (C7,B7 etc) . Before starting barre chord , i want to improve my strumming as changing chord and playing simple 4 down strum is getting very boring . Really want to try rocksmith but cant get the damn cable anywhere in india .

Rocksmith wont teach your strumming patterns. Use youtube for that. Just by changing strumming and the dynamics of that, you can create a lot of variety with just one chord.

Since you are following Justin's method, I suggest you go to the songs section and start learning some beginner's songs. He has many tutorials where he teaches both the simple way and proper way of strumming so you can pick up some tips from those. Also, listen carefully to songs and just try to follow the rhythm by muting the strings with your left hand (gently grip the neck so that your fingers touch all the strings but not hard enough to play any notes) and try strumming along. Don't get too caught up with "strumming patterns", as long as it sounds good and close enough. Rocksmith won't teach you how to strum, it's more suited for electric guitar and playing the right notes.

Yeah i know that rocksmith wont teach me strumming . Just wanted to play some punk rock songs ( Green day) . I have learned 7-8 songs till now like Back to december , Mad world , Three little birds , how to save a life etc with easy strumming . Since i have an electric guitar i dont get that feel of acoustic playing and justin teach most of the song with the acoustic guitar . So playing this song with simple strumming feels more like changing chords . So i am now working on the strumming pattern before moving on . can you guys link me to a video that teaches some good strumming for beginners ?

Learn from songs. That's what I do. There are variety of strumming patterns in different songs.

Try You and Me:

Notice the pattern and chord shifts. Pretty cool song to play and sing along.

This one is a difficult song with mutes and barre chords:

Took me some time to get the strumming right. Still can't sing along with strumming.

And this song if you ever get inspired to play fingerstyle :) I can't play this one at all :(

Btw he is using nylon stringed guitar.

Rocksmith is great for practice but you will have to figure out your own flow with songs.
I have no problem with strumming patterns. I feel it all depends on the song that you are playing.
I almost never strum in the same direction.

However, I change the genre of songs every month/fortnight so that I dont get comfortable with a specific style of song list.
This has helped me improve a lot. and made many difficult songs easy to play.

Bachsmith helped me take care of accidental mutes :p
string skip saloon minigame helped me pick any string without looking at string.

Definitely , i was just watching random riff videos and this song popped up . The riff is simple yet so much powerful . Can you play this song ?

I tried the first riff (starts with D-12, B-15, G-14, G-12, E-15, G-14, E-14). It's easy but I don't usually play solos. Not the fast ones. Not particularly good at that. Can you post the youtube tutorial, I will try.

I play more rhythm guitar stuff posted in above videos. Mainly chords and strumming. Recently trying hands at fingerstyle.
