An invisibility cloak just like the one Harry Potter used to creep out of Hogwarts could become a reality within five years.
But instead of using magic, researchers from Purdue University, Indiana are using 'nanotechnology' and 'metamaterials' along with Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

Invisibility cloaks will work by bending light around an object
It works by bending light around itself like the flow of water around a stone, which would make both the electromagnetic cloak and the object inside hidden.
'The whole idea behind metamaterials is to create materials designed and engineered out of artificial atoms, meta-atoms, which are smaller than the wavelengths of light itself,' Professor Vladminr Shalaev said.
In his study reported in the journal Science, Shalaev used an array of tiny needles radiating outward from a central spoke, like a round hairbrush, that would bend light around the object being cloaked inside.
These tiny needles decrease the refraction or distortion of the light to almost zero, rendering it invisible.

'Whereas relativity demonstrates the curved nature of space and time, we are able to curve space for light, and we can design and engineer tiny devices to do this,' he said.
He added that as well as bending light they could do the opposite - concentrating light in one area.

The new technique could be used to create optical microscopes so powerful they would make DNA visible to the naked eye and superfast computer microchips.

Such technology will also give way to impersonation techniques; cuz if you can hide something, you can also show something else..

I reckon there's a problem with this 'cloak'(Sorry for bringing everyone sharply back to earth)- It appears as if the so called 'cloak' will need to be static with respect to the object inside in a spherical shape. Doesn't this mean that it will be like a static, solid, shield-kind of device? It definitely won't be like fabric! So no cloaks possible(Sigh!). It will be usable with something like a vehicle though. Or a building. Most probably, the military will use it for Aircrafts, Tanks etc along with Armor.

On top of it all, isn't the invisibility cloak a copyright protected term belonging to Warner Bros.? This means that these scientists will be sued by them if this thing is ever made;).
<SPOILER>
And just a trivial fact, the one used by Potter was the property of Ignotus Peverell and was a Hallow and can never be compared to another cloak! Let alone duplicated!:D

^^ With respect to each part of the body, a corresponding invisible shield can be created and hence used for hding. It can be static in that respect but the wearer has to be very careful. An armor kinda thing can be created which is pretty good enough for such a feat.

Actually such stuff has been created for a single wavelenth light; which uses minuscle needles to deviate the light in such a way that it travels around. But extrapolating the effects to VIBGYOR spectrum is THE MAIN CHALLENGE. :)

let me tell you guys something.
if something is invisible, it cant be cloaked and obviously invisible cloak lolol
cars cant fly if they do they are not cars lol

this stuff remionds the blanket of HarryPotter dump lol

yeah, yeah...crazy ideas,if finally getting to day light (lets say in another 50 years)!!!, we all will be forced to wear "detection" glasses ....
why are they trying hard to make peoples life hell..its becoming like anti-virus industry.
