Alarm Feature working when phone is power off MUST or NOT ???

for me its a very very must as smartphones are very power hungry...

Smartphones are supposed to be smart than normal phones, and they have the extra feature, or more advanced feature, but android OS or other smart phones do not have this basic feature, today morning i was very sleepy expecting my samsung galaxy 551 to wake me at 6 but it did not rather I heard the nearby church bell, and it rang 6 times, then i realized that its already 6, then googled on net and stumbled upon this thread, even my nokia 6151 had this facility of alarm when switched off and it also gave the option of switching the phone on or off after alarm was activated. Smartphones no doubt have extra features and can do a lot more than normal phones but they need to retain the basic important features of ordinary phones and battery backup in smartphones is a big issue, they are very power hungry ;(

Big debate on google code do read it you will understand

u r absolutely right...but this is not a basic feature IMO. if you want alarm to work, simply keep your handset on...I know this works in many non-smartphones but i dnt think for this reason only it should be included as a mandatory feature in smartphones too...
just my 2 cents

why i feel it should be included is that the battery backup of android smartphones is very bad, as they have hifi features battery draining is very fast, and if this feature is included it will save lot of battery. i need to charge my samsung galaxy 551 almost daily, inspite of minimal usage, same with HTC, EVO etc other phones

And my Nokia E50, Nokia 8250, and some slider Nokia before that...ALL had them. This is like from 2000-2010. He he.

Android....! (Someone point D.Bond to this thread, PLEASE).

I am the night...I am...
Guys my nokia 5130 xpressmusic has this feature too. And my phone isn't smart at all.

Music quality is exceptional though.

Bond, Desi Bond!
actually, the reason why this is not put is that Android devices know what's best for their owners. When they are asked to shut up and sleep, they do shut up and stay asleep till they are turned on :D

just kidding. and yes, it's foolish to not have this feature.

Why not use the flight/airplane mode if you really want to conserv the battery life? The alarms will still work...

Smartphones are complex devices and them being power hungry is nothing extraordinary. What amazes me is that people taking this (alarm) feature as a deal-breaker. With the multitude of features present, I guess its a very small trade-off (atleast for me  )
Btw, a quote from androidforums on a discussion on this issue sums it up nice
TBH, accepting that you have to charge your phone every night is part of owning a smartphone.

Ordinary phones are able to sound alarm when powered-off...doesn't it really defeats the purpose of long battery life? If you really want your phones to have unusually long backup, perhaps Smartphones aren't really for you.

Or....you can use a watch....oh wait...most (analogue) watches don't have alarms....:D

I have an analogue watch with an alarm. :)
It is 'dumb' of the smart phone if it cannot power on using an internal clock and sound the alarm. But ya..why would one switch off their phone any ways. Flight mode works quite well.

No one uses phone in night time so to conserve battery they switch it offf, but at same time they need to use alarm actually if you see this is a very basic feature, even flight mode will not help to save much than switching off the full phone,,, when BB has it why not android / samsung etc implement it in their hardware n software bios etc etc

most Nokia phones have this feature..

They are very reliable mostly loosing out to others due to lack of features/bad os

a Nokia phone running Gingerbreaed(Android) or froyo will be very interesting

Smartphones needs to become smarter by using internal clock to sound alarm on time..or else they're pretty dumb!

@asingh: thats why I said most watches not all ;)

As for switching off the phone at night, I guess its more of a personal preference. I don't wish to miss any important calls at night so No switching it off for me.

A nokia phone with android...right now it seems a very distant possibility but you never know :)

^^ can't believe that statement (saying smartphones are dumb if they can't play alarm when switched off)....anyways you are entitled to your opinion. but I am surprised at those guys who switch off their phones in the night!!! I mean come on guys what about any emergency! If somebody needs to get in touch with you without wasting any minute, he/she would have no option...
And why worry about "conserving" the battery??? It does not take a lot of power that the battery would drain completely in night! Just keep the handset on..and that's it :)

@rsk11584: this feature is available in all Nokia models even in N8.....coz Nokia understands users basic need..... :)

& also Nokia Smartphones (all Nseries etc) has this inbuilt search feature(pretty interesting) which searches for a "keyword" entered by u...in memory card & phonememory...& gives the respective result if dat keyword is found in say contacts,messages,mediafiles(audio/video),notes etc...which is not available in samsung smartphones.....
