Not much I know.............but IRCs are older version of modern chat! Just like the stuff u see in old hacking films like "Hackers" where a person logs into a room and then the chat with others begins.
Its actually very convenient if u want to have a college gathering online! "IRC" or "X-CHAT" program of fedora 5 is very nice for this! Check it out.........for other stuff u asked......log onto any one irc servers in the given list of this program and then u can ask the regular members there who actively chat there!

I think digit shud also make an IRC server....then digit forum+IRC will rule the whole net!

Digit IRC exists but no longer contains visitors...
That is except me.
Also type
Code:
/help
in the mesage box and it give you list of all commands. Then to know more about a command type
Code:
/help <command name>

Cos few people pop up there sometimes. There were two visitors in last two days. Sourabh and knight17.
Also, you can download XChat for windows as it's free and very good.

See my above reply. Use XChat.
To get to digit IRC room
1) Create a new server and name it stardock
2) Click on edit and change the server name to irc.stardock.com/6667
3) In channels to join type #thinkdigit
4) Cllick on Close button
5) Highlight Stardock and click on Connect button.

Also check this site for more on IRC commands *www.irchelp.org/irchelp/misc/ccosmos.html

i can connect to the net only through a http proxy. No SOCKS on that. Is there any client for this situation?

In XChat check in Settings => Preferences => Network =>Network Setup
I think that should do it.

Dude, just use Opera's irc client, you won't need to learn anything then :D . Its very very easy.

Yes but it lacks so much of stuff! IRC is never fun without a client made specially for it, damn, IRC's so geeky :D

Do you know how to do this with Irssi? I'm also behind a very restrictive http proxy.

You forgot to RTFM :)
Read
Code:
 man irssi
I think you need to make some changes to /etc/irssi.config for global or ~/.irssi/config file for local changes, that's what I made out of man pages. I haven't used proxy before so well I don't know much about proxy yet.

thanks for the replies.
xchat is shareware, so i am not too eager to use it.
Opera seemed a good idea and the interface looks good, but when it is trying to fetch the room list it says 0 rooms. Is it a proxy thing?
Also, i guess irssi is only for linux. right?

This irc stuff has left me tired and frustrated.

Who said XChat is shareware? I don't know if irssi exists for windows. But, I don't think it does. Opera thing is becase of proxy surely.
Get XChat that's the best. I myself use XChat here on linux, it's also available for windows.
BTW, get version 2.x, as it's based on GTK so it would be better.

XChat is released under GPL, see this *www.xchat.org/about/. You must be confused with mIRC.
