If you are running Ubuntu 7.04 and you have intel graphics then it will work without any problem. for nvidia n ATi you need to install driver. go to System > Preferences > Desktop Effects and enable it.

Compiz is the default window manager in Ubuntu 7.04

For beryl to fully work u need to download beryl, to do this open

System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager

And click on the search button in Synaptic Package Manager
u will get return results
Select Beryl and mark it for installation.
Click on apply (u need to hav net connection)
Beryl will be installed automatically and u will get the notification of successful installation.
To start beryl press ALT+F2:
Type:
beryl-manager
A read diamond will come to system tray, thats it

After that, to create a desktop shortcut:
Use your text editor of choice to create a file named /usr/share/xsessions/Beryl.desktop.

$ sudo gedit /usr/share/xsessions/Beryl.desktop

Paste or type the following into it:

[Desktop Entry]
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=Beryl
Exec=/usr/bin/startberyl.sh
Icon=
Type=Application

save your file, and close your text editor.

restart the system or else press CTRL+backspace to restart X-session

For troubleshooting use this guide:

actually there is the "session" starts with most wm's.that is,in GDM menu sessions-u can chose which wm u want to use.as in earlier gnome the window manager was sawfish.
as with GNOME session replacing metacity,i dont know much but u can choose other wm by using gconf tool someway.Google Is Your Friend :)
