hmm ok my current conspiracy theory is something like
someone in china is like there must be those who are still too [strike]smart[/strike] stingy to buy a smartphone, and we need to snag those suckers and get them trapped forever somehow, the only way to do it is to dump some unsold stock on them
also, something fishy about the price because no other offerings in that bracket. it is not like they have made a considered lower spec device that is just right for some usage scenarios. they are just marketing a cheap droid like that.
just ignoring all the other things that make it an abomination. that it is copied from iphones, that it is bandied about as some kind of made in india thing, that it has a sticker on the back with the India flag in the wrong proportions and if you peel it off there is a chinese brand logo underneath... I really hope the stickers and the whitener ink used to obscure the logo, are at least, made in India.

Obviously is not for helping poor because its not backed by Govt. and its not something where Govt. subsidy will be appreciated. Question still remains, why they are doing this ?
A news was there where they said they will be making Rs. 31 profit even on selling at this price point by various scaling methods. But claiming anything is easy, in real life its not possible and probably they are fooling / evading from questions for time being.

Still, if they are dumping unsold stock, transportation + imports + other duties, still will be lot more costly than Rs. 220 (as they said will be making Rs. 31 profit per unit) . Even if they declare its value Rs. 1, there will be lots overheads getting it from China to India where Rs. 220 looks deceptive.

latest news is they are going to refund the money of 30000 thousands people who were successful in making payment for pre booking. Henceforth the company will only deliver phones COD [ cash on delivery ] basis so they can at-least claim they are clear of any sort of scam with people's money.
