I am learning shell programming and I want to run those programs in my some so can any one tell me is there any software or compiler available that run on xp to run shell program or I have to install Linux or Unix operating system.

any laptop around 20k, which should have a decent processor and 2gb ram; even if it doesnt, i can go for an upgrade, BUT it should be able to support it... purpose would be mainly programming. Thank you so much guys... Quick replies would be appreciated... I am in a bit of a hurry.

I use Windows Vista and require the best softwares that are available for programming in C. For example , Compiler, Library, etc. Also plz tell me if Microsoft Visual Studio can be used to create C programs ? :) :) :)
