What is Better i7 2600 with 8G ram or i& 950 12G ram

Right off the assembly line
Its been a while since i looked at getting a new computer to replace my 6 year old one. My current one is a Pentium 4 3G prcoessor with 2Gb Ram 256Mb graphics card. Naturally I have no clue about computers atm and compared what I am used to all modern computers sound amazing.

If the first 1 is better and there are any you have any sugguestions for its improvements it can be easily modified while the second one is not custom built.

I use the computer for gaming and running engineering programs for Uni
the size of the hardrive doesn't worry me my current hardrive has 75Gb of space.

My main Question is what is better an i7 2600 with 8G ram or an i7 950 12G ram

My budget is 1200 AU$ but i can spend a little more if the improvement is worth the cost.

BMG ftw!!
Sadly, when the currency conversion comes into play you need much more money than the converted amount of money. If the conversion were that much easy, one can get high-end setup of $1100 in just about 49,000/- but practically the cost goes to around 65-70k.

Even today, hardly any application actually use full 8 Gigs of Ram and 12 GB ram use is simply far cry for any kind of applications.
So here you have to concentrate on the sheer processor performance where Sandybridge architecture based i7 2600K is far better than old Nehalem based i7 950. i7 2600K can even challenge the highest end Nehalem based i7 980 six core processor, priced at $1000. So get the i7 2600K based config with your eyes closed.
Also LGA 1366 based X58 is a already EOL and no upcoming processors from are gonna support X58 platform.

and a good 500w psu will be enough for this setup i guess.you only have to calculate the cost of this setup as i don't know the price in Australia.

BMG ftw!!
I am currently in Australia and I'am buying in the local currency so conversion isn't an issue

Then first one is better, as sandy-bridge architecture which i7-2600K uses is better than nehalem architecture which i7-950 uses.

Why is everyone telling the OP to get the 1st config. It has a GTS 450 FFS. The second config will perform much better for the OP's uses (Gaming and engg).

IMO they are both BAD. Better to get 2500k with 6950. OP can even go with 2400 + H67.

Like Ishu said, go for 2500K instead of 2600K. Performance difference is not that huge and you can go for a better gfx card too.

Cause OP didn't give us other options.
Otherwise as you have already said in your post, both are bad. But these 2 config were made by op & he/she only asked to choose between these two rather than posting any new config. :?
