pc slows down !!!

i m using
AMD 3200
MSI K8
512 + 256 trancend RAM
80 GB hitachi + 80 GB samsung 7200 rpm HDD
Win XP sp2

recently my sytem drastically slows down when i m copying something especially from a CD or a DVD to my HD. even de song playin in winamp dosent run smoothly... is it a virus?
i checked my sys temp using 'speed fan' its avg is always around 45 C, it it fine.
plez hepl me

Disable your antivirus when copying files. Since winamp also skips audio this means CPU usage is going high.

i hav tried everythin... disabled my antivirus, used every possible soft like 'norton utilities', 'tune-up', 'pc-boost' but no results. i even close any application runnin in background but dosent help.
is it a virus...
or is there some hardware problem????

try replacing your IDE cables of both hard disk and dvd drive...
it worked for me sometime ago..
but i m sure it isnt a virus.. it must be a hardware problem

my funda whn it slows down : format n reinstal.
takes max 1 hour to restore the pc bak to the original state [includes installin windows + all softs n drivers]...stil this 1 hour is a gud CAPITAL INVESTMNT to reap REVENUE INCOMES in terms of fast speed

I think it the prob. of DMA.
Activate it from nero tool kit.

You can try this tool ..
It could possibly be an infection .. Just tell us if some particular process in the task manager is high up on CPU usage. Oh and better run a scan ..

I suffer the same problem of 80-100% CPU usage when coping images from CF card, I cant do any other work at that time & I wonder why would copying 500 files take that amount of cpu usage?

I posted earlier but could not find any solution.
It happens both on my desktop & laptop

reinstall windows WITHOUT norton and then see. Norton is bad, trust me!!

Run this program (*download.sysinternals.com/Files/ProcessExplorer.zip) and post a screenshot here. May be we could identify some unwanted process that should not be running.

Do regular........
1) Disk clean up
2) Registry cleaner...try ccleaner or tune up
3)Disk defragment once in a moth.

Just format and reinstall windows or ne othr os ... it will defintly wrk dude

and use avsat anti virus ... nd do clean ur cookies,histry,temp folder check HD for bad sectors nd defrag ur HD monthly

pulled this from ms website "For repeated DMA errors. Windows XP will turn off DMA mode for a device after encountering certain errors during data transfer operations. If more that six DMA transfer timeouts occur, Windows will turn off DMA and use only PIO mode on that device.


In this case, the user cannot turn on DMA for this device. The only option for the user who wants to enable DMA mode is to uninstall and reinstall the device."

so yeah would suggest a reinstall of windows, or if you want to waste more time you can try to uninstall/reinstall the drivers but I think you said you tried that before. or if you want to try and set the DMA follow ms's solution "
To enable DMA mode using the Device Manager
1.
Open Device Manager.
2.
Double-click IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers to display the list of controllers and channels.
3.
Right-click the icon for the channel to which the device is connected, select Properties, and then click the Advanced Settings tab.
4.
In the Current Transfer Mode drop-down box, select DMA if Available if the current setting is "PIO Only."
If the drop-down box already shows "DMA if Available" but the current transfer mode is PIO, then the user must toggle the settings. That is:
•Change the selection from "DMA if available" to PIO only, and click OK.
•Then repeat the steps above to change the selection to DMA if Available
