AMD plans to move its production line to the 45nm manufacturing node in Q3 while releasing a few new 45nm processors before the end of the year.

In an attempt to reduce costs, AMD plans to move its production line to the 45nm manufacturing in Q3 of this year. The Sunnyvale, California-based chipmaker already has two products currently using the next-generation processing: the quad-core Phenom II X4 800 and 900 series (Deneb), and the triple-core Phenom II X3 700 series (Heka). From a price and performance standpoint, these two processors have helped AMD compete against its main competitor, Intel, in the CPU market currently dominated by the rival chipmaker.

However, AMD is moving additional CPUs over to the 45nm processing as well, starting with the dual-core Phenom II X2 500 series (Callisto), and the Athlon II X2 200 series in June. By September, AMD will have added the quad-core Athlon II X4 600

series and triple-core Athlon II X3 400 series (Rana) processors.
These should help AMD fend off Intel's assault when the rival company launches its three quad-core Lynnfield CPUs in the third quarter.

In addition to moving its desktop CPUs over to 45nm, AMD also has plans to launch several CPUs between Q2 and Q3 2009, most notably with the dual-core Phenom II X2 550 and 545 hitting the market by the end of the second quarter. The third quarter will see a large helping of new AMD releases: the quad-core Phenom II X4 945 (95W) and 8xx (95W), the triple-core Phenom II X3 7xx (95W), the quad-core Athlon II X4 630 and 620, the triple-core Athlon II X3 435 and 425, and the dual-core Athlon II X2 250, 245, and 240.

According to DigiTimes, there are also plans to release ten low-power consumption CPUs as well, including AMD's Phenom II X4 905e, Phenom II X3 705e and Athlon II X4 605e. These round out to a relatively great release schedule for the second half of 2009. A little competition between companies only means better products for the consumer.

xbitlabs already benched and oced X2 550 and 250.
both reached 3.9~4Ghz.
here it goes:

Oh jeez, I just hope they don't release more of the cache starved X4 8xx series, especially when it actually is a X4 9xx series with 2MB L3 Cache disabled. I mean what's the use. Instead, they should sell the X4 9xx series for the price of the X4 8xx series, thus increasing the no. of their sales.

^^Wrong. X4 8xx are a way to ensure that products don't go waste just because of defective cache.

AMD is adopting a stratagy used only by Intel before.

ALL its K10.5 45nm CPUs come from the same silicon. The no. of effective cores, effective cache size and quality of cores decide which CPU the wafer of sillicon becomes.

For the same reason, you can expect Phenom II X4 CPUs to become more common and cheaper later when manufacturing process matures and they start harvesting the dual cores indivudually.

Triple cores which are making a big mark now are bound to reduce in volume later.

But the X4 8xx series cache can be UNLOCKED!!!!!

And AMD is also launching Phenom II X2, and talks are already out that these can be unlocked. Then y the hell does AMD not wanna sell P2 X4 9xx at the price of these new P2 X2 5xx???

If they do this, INTEL is HISTORY.

Thanks buddy for the update.

They have benched those procs with intel e7400 which is a 2.8Ghz proc.

So a e8400 will perform better than e7400 for sure.

They oced the dual core 3.9Ghz & the quad core to 3.98Ghz but intel c2d series ( e8400, even a e5200 ) can easily reaches upto 4Ghz & beyond.

So, considering the benches those new procs performs as par with intel c2d series coz a c2d e8400 @ 3Ghz will perform as par with those procs ( according to that benchmark results )

So if amd release those procs at a cheaper rate then they have the advantage but then again who can tell that intel will not reduce the prices of their c2d procs to stay in the competition.

^^ Once 8 core CPUs enter the market LOL

BTW, the Phenom II X2 550 can be UNLOCKED to a QUAD CORE. This is confirmed, as more mobo vendors are making their mobos in such a way tht they can unlock phenom ii proccs

^^ are those unlocked procs really gives any significant performance boost ?
Can you point to some benchmark with a unlocked proc & a locked proc side by side.

Ya, I heard the news that you can unlock certain dual cores to quad cores but
I have not found any reputed website that really benchmarked a unlocked quad core.

No Dual COre unlocked to Quad Core of the Phenom 65nm series has been benchmarked. But the word about unlocking is true as I've seen the CPU-Z screenies.

65nm dual unlocked to quad dun OC wel,, or even worse at OC.
but unlocked x3 45nm to x4 are almost good as the x3 in OC.

Am sure that these will be lot cheaper than X3's and that is the reason why the comparison was done with E7400. Am thinking that X2 250 will replace 7750BE and X2 550 will compete with E7400.

They OC as good as a 9850BE and a 9950BE.

That's y the unlocked X2 7750 B.E. cud OC to 3GHz, about the same as a 9850BE.

^^after trying overclocking on 7750BE, I don't think it's a great overclocker. The max amount of OC that can be done on this one is 3.2GHz withour volting and 3.4GHz with volt increase. Compare this to E5200 which can go to 4GHz, it's pretty low (problem being that it is on 65nm SOI and E5200 is on 45nm SOI). That is why X2 550 and 250 will be lot better overclockers and should easily reach 4GHz.

And yet you bought it just because you are an AMD/ATI fanboy ?

BTW, there were rumours that the 7750BE and 7850BE are mostly unsold 9xx0 series CPUs with 2 cores disabled and often overclocked to 2.7GHz or 2.8GHz respectively.
