Ok I now doubt this is a processor issue, cause I have the same one (Prescott core but a generic PIV nevertheless).

I am not at all experiencing so called hangs :? !
My configuration:

P4 2.8 prescott(HT),384MB RAM,Nvidia 7300GT pci-e,gigabyte 915-GV based board,160+80GB hdd's .

Are u ppl saying Gnome lock up even in a clean Desktop?I think either some cron schedule will be running like updatedb or if beagled(too resource hungrY) runs in background this can happen. :-|

another option is are u ppl using 2.6.22-386 kernel?I am on Ubuntu on this kernel.may be try changing from kernel-generic to -386 kernel

well its not an infection my machine has a hung a lot of times like that it even froze during installations

True, Flash/Java tend to do this. I've experienced this in windows too.

I think either some cron schedule will be running like updatedb or if beagled(too resource hungrY) runs in background this can happen. :-|
Goto System > Prefs > Sessions > Uncheck Tracker and any instance of updatedb or beagle.

All the 386 kernels are not obsoleted. So its either generic or custom compiled kernel.
