Looks like Intel is planning to launch 65w TDP energy-saving quad cores under the Core 2 Quad Qxxxxs series:

I can see this being particularly useful for large server racks of course.

yaeh. That's the reason for their deep pockets. ANyway, evolution is the way the world develops.
I thought evolution worked like we will eventually grow wings and fly instead of that metallic prop  lol

Just for the reference: Server chips run much much cooler. An 8-Core 32-Thread Sun OpenSPARC T2 Processor consumes only 72watt at 1.4GHz.

Anyway, ontopic: This must be to combat the AMD 9x50e CPUs I guess...

Thats because they are asynchronous processors. They are made in such a way that only the portion required will be powered.

Not everything is for development, if things were done solely for development, cars would have been so cheap that throwing them away would prove cheaper than refueling it!

Intel wont work solely for development day and night. Its because it has competition and market.. And tons of other parameters come in.

Unless the openSPARC/ UltraSPARC processors are a threat to Intel; why would intel do anything?
If Intel hasnt done anything; its because it does NOT need to do anything.
