I am pretty sure about the password as i reinstalled the whole thing just to be doubly sure about the password. Plus i use the same password everywhere. And the password works at the welcome screen. So why can't i login as root from the terminal ? Actually i want to configure ubuntu for my Dataone connection but it is just not happening. Plus i had to disable my audio to be able to run ubuntu. I have 915 GLVG mobo :(

Actually, the Creators of Ubuntu have Disabled Root Login.. (cuz Root has the Tendancy to Screw up the System).

therefore they have introduced sudo / gksudo

if you want to access any Application as Root, type gksudo <app-name>

If You want to Login as Root in GDM

Login as normal user, type " sudo passwd " ,type a new root Password.

Goto System menu and Search for Login Setup. Select " Allow Root Login ".
