For me KMplayer ( and K-Lite Mega Codec pack ) is the all-time best WMP alternative

1)VLC Media player is the best option for all type of media whether video or audio.This player support mostly all type of file format.(freeware software)

2)Power dvd 11 which is best if you are interested to watch Blue ray movie or 3D movie.it has both classic mode as well as Cinema mode.(paid software 30 day free trial )

^^ the 4 holy quadrinity, can play almost all formats, in a sane manner.
never had a file i couldnt play, with these 4.
