pick Samsung Wave S5253 over Nokia 5233. the former one have capacitive screen & so with time won't make typing a pain.
don't consider any Android mobiles cause they usually don't have the best battery life (2days max) & girls may find the UI a bit odd. it is fine once you get used to it but there are many different settings. takes time to explore everything.

as mentioned by Sam avoid the Nokia, rather get a Samsung Wave S5253 or Micro Max A70..

I second on Micromaxx A70, being an android it will provide u with all round functionality( well jack of all trades , but master of none does holds good, but honestly whilst in a budget,dont we look for the very same). a 600 mhz proccy will be well suited for your needs,and android 2.2 onboard will allow u to feed urself with the prowess of a ultra basic smartphone

android is not a necessary since its for my GF. and am not sue if micromax is durable.
am now thinking between Samsung Wave S5253 and Samsung Star II Duos C6712
both looks same except star 2 is dual sim. should i go for it, or just stick with wave?

Nokia's first model in India was very durable. I must have dropped it multiple times, but still worked well till people started using it as hammer, LOL
Mate, all phones will have some issues if they are dropped a few times. The Samsung Star II Duos is a good phone but if you don't have the need for dual sim, I would suggest Wave S5253.
Also check out the Nokia 5233. It is a 3.2 inch touchscreen phone with multimedia features, comes with 2MP camera, Ovi player, Nokia Podcasting, Nokia messaging to access multiple email accounts, instant messaging & Nokia Xpress audio messaging app, Ovi Suite, social networking widgets, Nokia Maps etc. It's a good phone and may suit your requirement. @Zangetsu, also check out Nokia C2-02 Touch and Type. being Symbian it'll support more java app but don't know how good will be the UI as it lacks a D-Pad.

@Sam: ya,nokia C2-02 looks good..but Nokia confuses customers by manufacturing same model with different version nos...
