The Great Indian Dream

Hi guys,

I just wanted to ask you guys a simple question:

What technology, not invented yet, has the power to change India for the better?

Another way of thinking about this is: What is your dream for India, and if you had unlimited knowledge and resources, what would you invent to make that dream come true?

I just want honest opinions here, and everything from practical solutions that we could work on, to wacky out-of-this world ideas are welcome.

Just remember you have to suggest something that would make India and the lives we lead better... maybe ideas that will finally rid us of the "third world" tag...

I wish that we could do research in finding an unlimited supply of energy. This will solve a lot of issues. Secondly if could successfully find a way to make sea water either usable or drinkable it would be great :)

^ yeah, like developing more efficient and economical solar panels, so that atleast 50% of total power consumed is supplied from them. all the people would install solar panels like DTH dishes installed these days...

Interesting... what else?

I would want to find a way in which we can completely do away with paper money, perhaps we should have a one-mobile-per-indian policy, and make mobile payments the only way to conduct even everyday purchases. Thus making black money non-existent, and also reducing / eliminating corruption!

One-mobile-per-Indian is a good idea but if it is only being suggested for money transactions then why not use biometric technology. Using fingerprints and biometric gadgets one should be able to make payments/do transactions (a la Back to the Future, part3 I guess ;) )

Garbage

God of Mistakes...
There shouldn't be actual money in market? Almost every transaction should happen virtually?

With biometrics in mind... we could have something like US's Social Security Number -- basically a 12/16 digit unique identifier for each Indian -- just like UIDAI is trying to do, but mandatory.

I would really want to see much more efficient solar panels like someone said above....In India we have sufficient sunlight...It could easily solve the energy problem.
Also I want to see post office eliminated...Instead we can have cyber office.

Other then Tech I want to see a tablet which can provide nutrition equivalent to a meal....and cheap too:razz:

a voice translator and interpreter in every indian language would definitely bring the potential out of educated ignorant indians.i believe that english has been a huge obstacle in the modernizing or rationalizing the common man.so why not make our over educated society actually understand everything they study and invite scope for inventions in every field.

i also agree we need more electrical power than we generate now.domestic power generation technology might be the solution

Yeah!
Solar is the way to go!

Controlled fusion reactions would provide more than enough energy.
I wish to have the technology for fusion reactions.
I also wish for a miracle for peace in J&K.

Hanging, since 2004..
Distribution of industry to various locations instead of one prime location/city (preferably IT which is easy to set up compared to others like factories, etc) .

Think of the city as Mumbai which has all sorts of industries at one place making mass inflow of population which is impossible to manage for the government (and huge problem of cost of living). If the industry was cleverly distributed in the state or the nearby developing cities (Australia is an example, they do it), the problem would not have been huge.
I live in Pune and every IT company is here, if government made some rules or guidelines to enforce employers to set up their offices at developing cities then it would aid those cities and prevent metro cities from facing ever growing issue of population concentration.

I know the suggestion is not related to some revolutionary technology, but this is what I had in mind when I saw the topic title.

Hmm... Like a tech equivalent of the babel fish (from Hitch Hikers) ? That illusive dream of "Indian Unity" could also come a little closer...

Incidentally Google is doing a lot of work in the area of language recognition and translation here in India.

As Gagan said the most important thing we need to find for the faster development of our nation is a source of unlimited power supply. Do you know because of this petroleum import only we are loosing lot of money. If we (India) can find an alternate for it, our government can save a lot of money and dependency over middle eastern countries.

Implementation of social security number (like in US) in India may be harmful for the freedom of citizen as long as the corruption and partiality exists in our government body(don't take it negative in reality our gov is not yet free from partiality and all).

ideas that will finally rid us of the "third world" tag...

I firmly believe that, what we need more than any invention/technology/gadget is the civic sense. Just the will to treat our motherland with a little more respect and care, would go a long way..

and on technology front..
with finger print scanners becoming so cheap these days.. if we add one to the ATM machines and other payment portals, we can get rid of plastic card fraud to a great extent. (or maybe get rid of plastic cards all together!!)

I wish the Indian society would reject all forms of the "famous Indian conservatism" and that "culture/tradition" cr.ap, which are easily the most detrimental things that happened to us, and nothing has hurt us as much.

Whether anyone agrees or not, a conservative culture has no scope of excelling in today's world. Western and most foreign cultures (the hugely successful ones) have accepted that we're biological creatures with longings and cravings which are natural. :) Our screwed up culture wants us to think otherwise.

Instead of being philosophical and critical to Indian culture please contribute towards some nice ideas which is asked by the OP :)
All readers are very much aware of what longings/cravings you are pointing to..trust me it has nothing to do with development. But yes their education system is much better than ours but it also a fact that India produces no lesser brains than west.

Really? Ok then,

1. How do you explain the strong correlation between successful countries and their liberal (sexually and otherwise) societies?

---Not related to my original point, but.....

2. How do you explain that the most successful countries don't have parasitic parents living off their children and grandchildren all their lives in the name of love and togetherness (which is of course, a lie commonly resorted to by Indian parents)?

3. How do you explain that most successful countries' don't have a draconian-ly hierarchial family system where the "head-male-libidoEquipped-dad/granddad" will dictate the will of the house, rule over women, children, their lives and the timings when family members go to the bathroom (literally!)?

4. How do you explain that most successful countries believe in treating women with the "ladies first" principle? And in the majority strata of our lovely society, the wife will wait for the husband to eat first or else go hungry. No offence meant, but ask your mom, maybe she'll explain to you philosophically and critically why she makes the table for the family and not vice versa, why she'll wash the whole families dirty undergarments all her life while you and your pops will watch a cricket match. I suspect too many people use this "culture" thing as a mechanism to establish the dominance mindset that exists till date.

5. How do you explain that most successful countries don't have (and never had) the IIT/IIM/what-have-you madness which we have here? How do you explain that in those nations education is not a contest, but much more meaningful in the context of innovation and economy building rather than providing slave labor to other countries? Our IITs and premier instutions are built for the benefits and welfare of USA and the rest of the world, not for the measly and patheticly poor population that resides at home.

I'm sorry, but I don't agree with you. Being an Indian I say this: Indian culture is wrong, just plain wrong and demeaning. Personal freedom is not believed in, & the way children are raised and treated is just disgusting. For Indian parents, their children are long term investments that should bear fruit when they land their first paychecks.

As for the original poster: sorry for deviating from the main topic, but I feel it leads to this. Inventions are a far off thing, there are more things fundamentally wrong here. To invent would require to have freedom and funding, both of which aren't available. Talent? Of course, without doubt.

Take two succeeding pre-teen Indian generations, and treat them they way American and European kids are treated throughout their teens. Don't tell them "x is good y is bad", guide them but don't decide for them, throw them out of the mom-dad niche by the time they are 22-23 and rid them of all cultural/moral/traditional responsibilities, and see where they end up. My point will be proven.

@Gagan: Please don't get me wrong, I don't want you to take my post personally: I thought your conclusion wasn't good enough because you didn't back it up with an argument. I hope you'll do now. Hoping to have a good discussion without any hard feelings.

@RChandan
a little too hard on generalizing...eh ?
I do feel that the change is happening. Its not even 100 years since independence. Atleast you can count me in.

Name some not so obvious successful countries which did it within 100 years of independence.

Didn't the (West) Germans come back to become one of the most successful economies recovering huge destruction and humilation from World War II?
(I mean in economic rather than social point of view btw)
I think RChandan got it spot on here.

^^You urself gave the cue that it was from economical point of view. Now imagine 1000+ years of slavery (mental and physical). Would you think that it will be undone in just 3rd generation itself ? Give some time to let it heal. I'd say start at your home.
