IMO, M4a78-Pro or M4A78-EM are much better.
CX400 may not be enough for HD4850. Need atleast a 450W PSU.

This config is good for normal use PC
Not exactly a gaming rig........

@Aspire, ROFLMAO. HD4850, X2 550 and a normal rig???

Gaming rig need not have GTX285. This is more than enough for a budget of 40k

dare_devil, AMD based configuration suggested by dOm1naTOr is a real solid one and makes more sense then a Intel powered in your budget range but if you still want to know about Intel powered configuration then it could be like that :-

E7400 @5.7K
Palit P35A @4.2K
500GB WD HDD with 32MB cache @2.7K
Kingston 2X2GB DDR2 800MHZ @1.9K
Samsung 22X SATA @1.1K
Sapphire HD 4870 512 DDR5 @9K
Glacialpower GP-AL650AA @4.5K (yes this will do)
Zebronics Bizli @1.3K(without PSU)
Benq G2200 @9.2K
K+M logitech wired @0.5K

For AMD Powered system

AMD Phenom II X2 550 @5.5K
Biostar A790GX @4.5k

Rest of all same as in Intel configuration. Once more I'm suggesting you to go with AMD powered system.

BTW if you wanna have any other item like speakers or UPS in your budget you can easily downgrade suggested GPU to Sapphire HD4850 512 DDR3 @6.5K(holds more VFM then a 4870) and PSU to Corsair CX400 @3K in case of a 4850. This will allow you to work with 3.5K.

AMD config. is better because it is latest & much updated & Intel has same old technology & they r going to revise it Q4 2009 or Q1 2010.

The PII X2 550 is the best performing budget processor!!!

Some recommendations:

Phenom II X3 720 B.E.
HD4770/HD4870
Corsair VX450W

Get these minimum.
Comp@ddict forget about 4770 no VFM there as HD4850 is going for 6.5K nowadays and tell me is it possible a well balanced PC using rest of your recommendations under his budget of 40K?

If someone is concerned about the power usage, HD4850 uses more power than HD4770, but if someone is all about performance, then nothing better than HD4850. Personally, i also vote for HD4850!

yup, ejjatly
for a 4850, ull have to spend more on PSU and less on card
whereas 4770, more on card and less on PSU.

the sum of PSU+GPU price remains the same, and 4850 combo has the crown with more performance.

If u are so stern on Intel config, just remember these facts.
*Intel is gonna abandon current LGA775 socket soon.
*U cant upgrade the processor once the transitions happens.
*With an AM2+ mobo, u can upgrade nytime with an Am3 proccy, like a quad after an year when prices of quads fall.

Also a suggestion for mobo.
The gigabyte MA770T-UD3P is one hell of a mobo, and wont cost above 5.2k
it has got almost everythin a 10k mobo has, like all solid caps, ACC,full ATX, uncompromised OCing, multi phaze power to proccy, HD audio,AM3 support, DDR2 1333+ dual ram support and lot more. With this mobo and a PII 550, ull have the most future proof config in earth next to i7/X58.
