@sunny: yes if and only if you can sell 8800GTS cards for Rs. 5,000 each atleast.

GTX260(core216) performs as good or better as 8800gts sli in most cases.

Tht'll be possible if he has the GTS 512 parts, not the GTS 320/640M cards.

Well, stay with 8800GTS, atleast till 32nm CPU's and DX11/40nm GPUs come.

He has GTS 512 if I remember right.

The upgrade is definitely worth it because no performance is lost, instead, he breaks even but saves on electricity and avoids Linux SLI issues which he was plagued with.

8800GTS 512 is theoritically same as 9800GTX[not GTX+].[like 8800GT 512~9800GT 512].

So i dun think a GTX260 is much of an improvement over 8800GTS 512 SLI. Surelly single GPu has its advantage, but then again it dun seems the right time to upgrade to GTX260.
Maybe a GTX 275 will show gr8 jump in performance.

I still think that ATI's upcoming 49nm GPu will kill most current GPUs around. look at 4770[new low~mid range cad] which beats their own older HD 4850[older mid~high range] almost. So HD 5xxx with 40nm shud be quiet a beast.

I'm not concerned about Linux mate. It's all gaming that matters!
As I told you, gaming makes ZERO DIFFERENCE for most practical purposes. Yes the GTX260 has higher FPS but not high enough to make you buy it for FPS alone.

The only realistic benifits with HIGH victory margins over 8800GTS G92 SLI come in:

1. higher performance in games and OSes where SLi scaling is not good.
2. Support for CUDA/PhysX
3. Lower power consumption.

mmnn
yup
nvidia started Physics just after the release of old 8800GTX.
starting from 8800GT G92, 65nm all GPUs suported Physx.

PhysX isnt a deciding factor anyway....If you can sell your 8800's for about 8-10k then its definately worth the upgrade...Or hold on till westmere releases in Q1 2010 and spend lavishly on an entire new system

Hey, the power consumption part remains. :D

Besides, as I said, if and ONLY if he can sell the cards for atleast 5K each should he consider an upgrade.

^^but who will buy 8800GTS when 9800GT is available for 6.5k and 9600GT for same price??
Anybody who is not a regular member of TDF ofcourse

As for 9600GT @ same price, people would definitely like the idea of getting a 20% more powerful GPU @ the same price second hand.

And 9800GT is 1.5K more for slightly reduced performance or almost similar performance.

Some people eager to save money DO end up buying them. Besides, you also have the common guy-next-door who wants his neighbour's GPU since he thinks its uber cool.

ofcouse 9800GT @ 6.5k will be a challenge for his target 5k per card. But still 8800GTS almost equals a 9800GTX, and GT comes nowhere near.

but HD 4770@ 6.7k will cause some damage, as once oced, it can even beat GTS 250 or 9800GTX+.

Or try selling to someone saying the magical word "SLI" pairs for sale and too two powerful cards.

BINGO :D

I really think that selling is a better option I mean, a single card has more benefits that Gautham has shown. I'm sure you can grab someone to get the cards, maybe both.

And whats there to lose when you get almost similar performing 'new' card for the price or your 'old' card?
