Well, no sane person cares about WHO makes the phone as long as the phone is feature rich for its price and is durable and has nice warranty service, and yes, good looks.

Judgement Time!!
First of all..its not just India where Nokia has a large pie in market share, its also the same story in U.S & some European nations..So don't go aorund thinking that india only buys nokia & not motorola & SE & that India cannot look beyond Nokia which is a complete rubbish theory.I have loads of relatives & friends who use Nokia & few use SE..Indian market prefer Nokia prolly because of nokia's first handset in indian market..3310 which held a great reputation of never breaking or wearing off..I remember the time when people use to say in class that even if u throw 3310 outside from a building, the phone won't break but the road will..Nokia just carried off from there & frankly speaking i found Nokia giving in a hell lot of features in a (High End)Phone than Motorola or SE...SE rules in the low end phones...they are better ones in the lowerend market..Nokia gives u features OTHER THAN MUSIC & VIDEO playing...Has a host of features which other haven't yet come close...
I haven't mention the Apple here as they are new in the market...will wait & see...

Well , FYI moto rules in us coz of locked handset deals with carrier. nokia has a good market everywhere except US , China & Japan . SE comes second .

Well , the reason for this whole 'research' thing was that Nokia was trading the lowest ever at 22$ . I missed before too , coz i thought Nokia phones were just okay .

Regarding my opinion of N82, it is made from plastic and I felt it looked cheap coz of this .

Nokia does offer a lot of features in various price ranges...It is ideal for consumers who belong 2 every bracket..

i had a Nokia 3310..It was such a sturdy set...I was having Paani Puri and the mobile slipped into the water container 4m my pocket...I was amazed when it still kept on working after a little bit of drying it..So NOKIA rocks...
.

Yeah Nokia 3310 is indeed a nice phone...and it also was my first phone back in 2004:smile:
It was really a feature packed phone:smile:

Lemme tell you what makes nokia tick. I have been a nokia users for years and the thing i hated the most in their phones was slow processors, specially in the Symbian based phones, which i was a big fan of. This time, 3 months ago i buyed a Sony Ericsson W660i and to tell you apart from the lack of EDGE support, i was becoming a fan. But suddenly one day, the phone stopped charging from charger, although it was charging by data cable. I took it to service center and they replaced the whole motherboard. a month later, its headfone cum charging socket became very dirty and stopped detecting headfone at times. I though of cleaning it, and tried it with a very little moist cloth. Nothing happened, everything was working fine. But on the third day, it again stopped charging. I took it to Service center and they said its a water damage, dunno how. But anyways, they said its unrepairable even after paid repairs! I was shocked!!! But then, i tried some local repair services and they also said the same thing. I opted for the external sony ericsson charger and started charging battery by taking it out of phone everytime.Painful but working solution.

5 days back, the phone stopped catching signals. It showed No Network Access on every sim i tried. I took it to Gaffar market (One stop market for everything you want about mobiles, even chip level repairs, Delhites must be knowing about it) in Delhi and the guy repaired it along with charging. But gave no guarranty. So as i though, i stopped working again on the second day and now i am looking forward to buy a new phone.

The thing is, the repair person told me that components in SE phones are so tightly integrated on main board that most of the times it becomes nearly impossible to repair. Nokia phones are best in this regard, all the crucial components that may develop faults are detachable from mainboard.

So you see, apart from the durability and "rain" factor that codename_romeo and uppalpankaj talked about, repairability of Nokia phones is quiet high. And this is the reason why they sell at comparitively high prices even in second hand market. When you buy a second hand fone, u know that you may have to get it repaired in near future, and with phones that have less possibility of repair will catch your attension more.

For these reasons, i have decided to buy a Nokia now, coz Rs 10,200 was a big thing for me and i cant just spend that kind of money to try out other companies.

Offtopic: BTW, guys, i need a series 40 based fone with all the frills like great music in both speakerfone and headfones, 3g, edge and a good screen with a little better UI responsiveness within 7-8K budget. I am thinking about getting the Nokia 6233. What do you guys say? Is it worth the prices, which i guess is around 7000 currently??

Get the newer 3120 Classic instead. It is better than the now out-dated 6233.

I am not a big fan of s40 fones but they are somewhat better than SE fones in durability. The s60 smartfones are the real super ass kickers. Its just recenty that WM fones have become affordable, before an year or so they used to cost a bomb. It used to be Nokia and Symbian all the way. Most SE fones (non UIQ ones) have a stupidly simple UI with minimal software support. Symbian truly FTW.

Also nowadays Nokia is also selling it's low-end phones with Airtel prepaid cards, that too with lifetime validity. This makes buying mobile phones for first time owners a simple affair. Almost like the Apple iPhone. You don't have to worry about choosing the service provider, recharging the prepaid card, getting the lifetime validity done, etc. In one smooth move all these things are taken care of with the user only having to make the choice of deciding his/her phone number. Little wonder that Nokia has such a strong grasp over the low-end of the market (or the entire cell phone market for that matter).

Nokia is better because;

Relatively easy availability.
Easy repairibility.
Good signal.
Fair battery.

And now; people are getting used to Nokia. To a user who used a Nokia for sometime, the next phone is most probably a Nokia, thats what Ive seen.

its nt about fighting bro...!
bt u knw its a natural tendency tht the best things are somehw hated by sme....its nt tht im blaming u or something, bt this is a global phenomenon....thrs nthn in this world that everybody likes...and talking about nokia, a company cannot fool about 50% of the mobile phone user population of a country(in context of india).
Thrs no point discussing this matter.!

Nokia is popular because of the following:

Availability.... go to any mobile shop at anywhere (i m talking abt rural areas) and u will get nokia... 11xx or 16xx phones.

Affordability.... is affordable with the bundled options from Airtel & Smart.

Reliability... throw the phone on road.... it will split apart.... join it and u get a working phone. Any problem.... got it repair at any mobile repair shop. Very rare chances that the repairwala will tell you that it is beyond repair. Even the spares are still available for a 5-6 yr old nokia phone.

But nokia sucks in the Big Models.... N9x, N8x, N7x phones are slow, sometimes buggy. Even the build quality is not upto expectation.

I have used 3310, 1100, 2600, 2600 classic, 7610, N95, N73.... I still love my 5 yr old 3310 & 4 yr old 2600 than the just sold N95 :)

I checked out the nokia forum and nokia main website, and ya technical specification wise its 3120 classic is better than 6233 but i have one consideration : 3120 has only a single speaker, does ringtones sound that melodious and loud on the 3120c? I am also a bit off due to its round, girly shape. Any comments?

[off-topic] I thought you might raise the question of the loudspeaker volume. That's why before suggesting I checked out GSMArena's review of the 3120c, especially the loudspeaker test. According to the tests 3120c spits out the same decible levels as the stereo speaker equipped 6233. So the overall volume levels will be the same, just that you won't get the stereo effect.

As for the design, it's totally your call. I personally prefer 3120c over the 6233. [off-topic]

@krazzy: thanks man :) you made my day. I actually looked at some more photos of the phone and the net and then tried it out at one of my friend's mobile shop. I like it. I will buy the 3120c for sure, 6233 is out of my mind now. Just one more concern, In many of the classic series phones i have seen some serious limitations when it comes to GPRS. Some of them dont give the option to get custom settings from providers and provide hardcoded settings with them which many of the time dont work. My niece had such a phone, dont remember the model exactly, but its one from classic series and he can run opera on it. Not that opera doesn't installs on it, but after installing, opera fails to work with the hardcoded settings in the phone and the phone doesn't allows to get new settings from Vodafone. Vodafone rejects the settings request saying that the phone doesn't supports this feature. WTH! Can you please confirm this for me buddy?
