Hi
I want to upgrade my desktop. The details are as follows :

1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that)
A: Home computing. Includes some amount of Photoshop usage.

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM/ sellers? If not- why?
A: Did not understand the question.

3. What is your MAX budget?
A: Max 20k (including display). But would like a cheaper config since I am also planning to buy a netbook.

4. Planning to overclock?
A: Dont know.

5. Which OS are you planning to use?
A: Windows 7.

6. How much hard drive space is needed?
A: Already have two hard drives. One Samsung 160GB and another WD 500GB. So no hard disc required.

7. What resolution will the screen run at & whats the size of the screen you want? If you already want have one and want to use it, mention its resolution and size.
A: Currently I have a 17" LG CRT. Planning to upgrade to a 18" LCD/LED (price is a consideration).

8. How would you rate your hardware knowledge from the count of 1-10? (1 being the lowest, 5 being you are somewhat in sync with the current performers and 10 being the highest)
A: 2-3?!

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
A: No. Never done it myself.

10. When are you planning to buy the system?
A: Within a week.

11. Are you one of the types looking out for "future proof" configurations?
A: Not required because requirement is very basic.

12. Are there going to be any components that you don't want to include in this new rig? If yes, do mention.
A: Graphics Card.

13. Which city do you live in and are you open to buying from shops from other city/states?
A: Mumbai. Would prefer to buy here.

14. Mention any other points if deemed necessary
A: Currently, I have a AMD 3800+ processor with Asus M2N MX motherboard. Facing problems continuously presumably due to RAM. Also, on a previous occasion replacing the processor fan became quite a hassle. So would like to know a decent config in Intel also. I do not require to buy the following items : DVD drive, speakers, hard discs, KB, mouse.

Why APC here? Price is a consideration and moreover both these UPS have 2yr warranty.

d3p5kor's config is just perfect under budget.

Thanks for the replies. I have a few questions.

1. Would a cheaper Gigabyte motherboard be a good replacement?

2. Can you give me some alternatives as regards RAM, SMPS, cabinet, etc in case these are not available with the same shop.

3. How would you rate the Iball Sparkle 18.5" LED Monitor? I think its available for Rs 5700. I read one review about the Acer monitor and it was negative wrt Photoshopping.

Thanks and regards

Searching someone
1. Would a cheaper Gigabyte motherboard be a good replacement?

what do u mean by cheaper, if u wish to upgrade ur rig, then it mean, u wish to adapt new technology, most boards with 1155 sockets are in the range mention above, if u wish to stay with 775 socket then, it s a good choice only and only if u dnt wish to adapt new technology.

2. Can you give me some alternatives as regards RAM, SMPS, cabinet, etc in case these are not available with the same shop.

SMPS Iball sprinter, cabinet coolermaster elite series

3. How would you rate the Iball Sparkle 18.5" LED Monitor? I think its available for Rs 5700. I read one review about the Acer monitor and it was negative wrt Photoshopping.

most new LED or LCDs have problems for Photoshopping, samsung is a good choice for this purpose.

Don't buy all product from same shop if they are not available.

most new LED or LCDs have problems for Photoshopping,

Really?
Please enlighten me about those 'problems'.

Few more queries..

1. The rates which d3p5kor has mentioned... is it available in Lamington Road? Or do I have to bargain to get these rates?

2. Should I go in for the balance peripherals also (kb, mouse, dvd drive)? Is there any resale value for my old CPU and 17" CRT monitor?

regards

BMG ftw!!
Like color accuracy, which is most important part of this job

Well, may be I'm a noob working with photoshop for last 8 years, but I can feel any difference in color accurecy at any of the monitors I've ever used. (lineup will be like: CRT -> TFT -> LCD)

MV VIP to the MAX
Agreed. Professionals who can afford more expensive monitors go for LCD with IPS panels.

Why do u want to go for 18.5" iBALL LED monitor @ 5.7k??
You can get a 20" i.e DELL IN2020M 20" HD LED @ 6k or even the SAMSUNG B2030 @ 6k. Both monitors are just great.
So, avoid iBALL and go for some good brands like SAMSUNG and DELL.

Hi All
Thanks for all your valuable inputs. I picked up the following stuff from Lamington Road.

Intel i3 2100 + Intel DH67VR = 9775
GSkill Ripjaws XF3 4GB XL = 1650
LG Sata DVD Writer = 1050
Zebronics Bijli = 1400
FSP Saga II 500W = 2400
Acer P206HV LCD 20" = 5050

What I gathered from the above purchases is :

(a) Saga II 500W is a rare commodity in Lamington Road. Most shops didnt have it.

(b) Gskill 2Gb single stick is not available. either take two sticks of 2gb or single 4 gb. 2x2gb cost Rs 2000~2100

(c) Couldnt budge the rates to come down to what has been shown here.

(d) this mobo is futuristic since it has only 2 sata slots (so i could fix only one of my two hard discs and i had to buy a separate sata dvd writer). no ps2 slots for kb or mouse. dvi slot for display rather than vga (thank god i bought the acer lcd.. it has the dvi slot)

Is a LED display available with same model no?

For motherboard, get the Intel DH67BL-B3 model, priced @ 5.5K. It has 2 SATA III 6 Gbps and three SATA II 3 Gbps ports. So total port count is 5. It also comes with one eSata port.
Currently VGA is actually not provided in most of the boards as there is a visible quality loss with VGA connections and most of the Display comes with DVI and/or HDMI inputs which delivers superior image quality.

Currently 4GB is the standard memory size as it is very cheap and even premium memory modules like Corsair Vengeance, Gskill Ripjaws 4 GB modules are available within 1.7K. Since H67 doesn't support beyond 1333 MHz, get the Corsair 4 GB 1333 MHz value ram @ 1.2K only. Currently all corsair rams are coming with limited lifetime or 10 Yrs of warranty.

If you want a LED display, then you've to go beyond 5.5K. The cheapest one I found is Acer S200HQL @ 5.7K in Deltapage. But the local price may be less. I'm guessing it as the P206HV price is listed as RS 5250 in deltapage but you've found that local price is Rs 5050, 200 bucks cheaper.
