Hi guys
Today I installed Vector Linux on my system.8)
Eveything else is working fine but I think the OS is not able to mount/recognise (whatever the reason be) my CD burner and the windows partition.
DVD burner is working all right and I can open it by the "cdmedia" icon on the desktop.
I tried using /media and /mnt folders but they contain around 10-15 subfolders and all are empty. (Unlike ubuntu, which had /media/hda1 for my windows partition).

One more offtopic query.
Can you guys tell me any bittorrent client which has file selection (from the torrent) feature (something which transmission does not have and ktorrent have).
XFCE is the default environment hence I cant use ktorrent.

Thanks.

^^Here you go, but please replace :p 8) and :D with : p, 8 ) and : D respectively. There are smilies in the txt below due to digit forum!!!

Messed up symlinks in /dev/ by udev :?
Code:
ls  -l  /dev/cd*
^will show what is symlinked to what
just add below entries in /etc/fstab:
Code:
 /dev/hdd        /media/cdrw   udf,iso9660 user,noauto     0       0
make a dir in /media/ as /media/cdrw then try.
may be u can do this too:
Code:
modprobe cdrom

This is what I get after I list all the cd* drives.
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdr -> cdr0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdr0 -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdr1 -> hdd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 6 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdrom -> cdrom0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdrom0 -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdrom1 -> hdd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdrw -> cdrw0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdrw0 -> hdc
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 3 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdrw1 -> hdd
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 5 2007-06-24 15:35 /dev/cdwriter -> cdrw1

I made the dir as you said.

When I try modprobe cdrom, it returns the message
FATAL: Module cdrom not found
This is happening with every module i.e cdrom0, cdr0, cdrw etc..

Things are working now.I can access the cdrw drive.

But theres still a problem, I have a partition hda5, it is still not mounted. I made a similar directory and added a line
"/dev/hda5 ext2 defaults 0 0" under the header "# The Linux Partition" where the original partition hda3 is.

those are not modules except "cdrom" which i asked u to try.those output are symbolic links made to the original device file hdc or hdd.
In linux all devices everything are files with specific ids!

did u edited /etc/fstab as per my post and did u try mounting any cd?

post ur
Code:
fdisk   -l
^ you need to be "su" root user to get the output.
u need to know the fs for /dev/hda5

I edited the fstab file to include the line
/dev/hda5 /mnt/hda5 ext2 defaults 0 0
This is the output of mount -a
mount: mount point /mnt/hda5 does not exist
mount: none already mounted or /dev/pts busy
mount: sysfs already mounted or /sys busy

u can mount /dev/hda3 as first make a directory /mnt/hda3,
then edit /etc/fstab as:
Code:
/dev/hda3  /mnt/hda3  ext3 defaults  0 0

/dev/hda5 is what u see when u boot into vector Linux! if u really want to see ur /dev/hda5 open ur file manager(nautilus,thunar or konqueror) and enter "/" and press enter.u will get what i say.ur /dev/hda5 is completely taken by vector linux.so dont expect another free partition there!
yeah yahoo now on!

whats your ID?

#/etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# The following is an example. Please see fstab(5) for further details.
# Please refer to mount(1) for a complete description of mount options.
#
# Format:
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
#
# dump(8) uses the <dump> field to determine which file systems need
# to be dumped. fsck(8) uses the <pass> column to determine which file
# systems need to be checked--the root file system should have a 1 in
# this field, other file systems a 2, and any file systems that should
# not be checked (such as MS-initrd/mnt or NFS file systems) a 0.

This problem is not anyway related to vector linux but I dint want to create a new thread just for some lousy problem.

I have 2 partitions,
/ >> 2GB
/home >>6GB

I keep on downloading & installing new packages and given the fact that in Zenwalk (My new distro :D) only root is allowed to install packages, should I increase the / partition size???
If yes, then how can I increase the / size and decrease the /home size w/o losing data???

Alternative Question:: Is there any way by which all the softwares are installed in /home directory instead of / ???

Try gparted. I have reduced quite a few partitions with it without data loss.
One way to make this easier is to use LVM. But, it has it's own downfalls too.
If you are using LVM, it'd be good to have a separate /boot partition.

I downloaded iso file of gparted, it was corrupted. I am not downloading it again:mad:
I even downloaded PartitionMagic, but it does not support XFS. :(
Any other partition size increasing/decreasing tool that fully supports XFS, and has nice user friendly interface?
