Legend Never Ends
-> In the Run windows type

c:\windows\inf
press enter this will open the inf folder

-> Right click on the srchasst.inf file and select install option

-> Load the XP CD in the CD ROM when asked and press OK or if you have dump of XP on your system then give the path

example d:\windows\i386 and press enter

-> It will automatically install the missing file for your search option and your search option start working

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst
\srchui.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll

Looks like a case of corrupt windows files. Have you tried repairing your XP?

I don't think so. No other symptoms could be found which point to an infection. Scanned using avast, malwarebytes' and ASC.

Click Start, Run and type:

regsvr32 %Windir%\srchasst
\srchui.dll
regsvr32 jscript.dll
regsvr32 /i urlmon.dll
The first command failed. Gave the following error -

Not yet. Will consider if no other option left.

The search is back! After I tried thetechfreak's commands it did not work but after the reboot they're working fine.
Thanks! (Whew! no repairing now)

Which commands? Can you be specific, for the record. Since it would be helpful, for others who would come looking for a solution later.
