Is networking domain a low paying job?

is networking domain a low paying job?

lots of people are telling me to avoid getting into networking domain

first of all it a tedious, hectic and low paying job.
secondly sys admins are not given respect as compared to software engineers
thirdly the growth in terms of salary is very slow...

for eg
ccna = 22k 12k + coaching
ccnp = another 20k
rhce,mscitp,msce,rhcss etc etc(optional) = 20k each

and all you get after so much time andexpenses is a 20-25k salary
which stays stagnant for almost 3-4 years

you only get paid higher if u get a CCIE certification...
which is a costly affair and time consuming
need at least 5-6 years of exp

ccie = 1.5 - 2 lacs

they say instead get an MBA
but im not at all interested in doing MBA

my plan was to do ccna +ccnp
then try for jobs

I once worked in the networking field back when NT 4.0 was the thing. However I worked in the US . Not to mention I was sent back to specifically get my CCNA and CCNP. I've never bothered upgrading though. I used to get paid much much more than the amount you mentioned now though.

Certifications aren't meant to land you a job but more like to add to your existing skill-set. Think of it as a supplement. I personally know of a Comp. Sci. Major who has been following the networking career path and makes 4 times the amount you mentioned each month . Although hes been working with them for 5-6 years now. As far as respect is concerned let me put it this way. Respect is earned it isn't given.

Hii

This dilema always was one i started with . I was actually good in coding but i choose networks over code and MBA.
I am CCNA , CCNA security ,CCNP and CCIE security written certified.I passed my engineering in 2011 and am currently empolyed in Network Solution Architect profile (similar to a presales one ).

Before joining i was CCNA . CCNP ertified , but as someone pointed out respect is earned . These certifications give you an edge over others but u still have to show u have good grip over the subject .

On the other hand , Freshers generally start on avg packages as you mentioned irrespective of their domains . Personally i choose networks since it is upcoming field and fight for places is not as tough as you would find in other domains .Inintally packages do not matter u should concentrate on the profile you choose to work on .

MBA is another field and its your choice what u want be in future.

^^But how much can a guy expect to earn after working for 3-4 years given the work of the guy is commendable?

Buddy , generally if u stay in the same company ur packages wont appreciate much .

Suppose you switch jobs and ur a commendable candidate you can easily command arnd 7 - 9 lakhs pa .

If you cn be a CCIE and have good experience arnd 5 you cn go upto 15 lakh pa

But you are having B.Tech degree also, won't that count ? I know a person who completed her B.Tech from a fairly good college and worked for 7 yrs. in TCS. Her salary now is 12 l.p.a . Now if you have B.Tech degree and CCIE also, then you get good salary after a long experience, isn't it weird ?? Sorry, if I made any unknown offence . .

hmm.... and that too in a consultancy company !! whatever, the big question is that if you have already chosen B.Tech as your carrier, should you shy away from networking domain to keep better health.... as the same labour can yield better in other aspects !?! In fact, should an "engineer" not chose the networking domain at all !!? Because a 12th pass out/bachelor from other domain having CCNA+CCNP = a B.Tech passout having CCNA+CCNP (if I'm not wrong)

networking is good field but IT people and lot of companies did not care much about system Admins which is just sad since admin is responsible for maintaining their company Infrastructure and much more and pay is less but you can except around 3 LPA as a fresher but once you have real time exp about 3 yrs you can get good salary.
But you have to learn by yourself new technologies if you have zeal to learn then go for networking and doing MBA will be the worst decision I have to say if you are a B.TECH.

No offence here ,Crazylamhe, buddy . I am an Engineer who works as a Network Solution Architect.

I am a CCNA , CCNA Security , CCNP and CCIE Security written certified .
As you said NA+NP = Btech is a kind of joke...
Those guys cn never compete with an engineer in a lot of aspects . Most of the jobs even in network in big companies do require a engineering graduate .

And i was a good developer but inspite of it choose networks . Its not a low paying job . It requires constant updation with IT industry and if you have the right attitude and work hard you can easily scale in any sector . Rest is your choice of Intrest.

You bet, I do have a lot of zeal. Currently, I am in the 2nd yr.(IT). When in class 11th, I wanted to be a hacker, someone suggested me to be thorough with networking 1st. Since then, I have a knack for it, but eventually I see no enthusiasm in others w.r.t this field.

It's ok buddy. Actually I was wondering if you do any course(B.C.A/B.Sc./GNIIT) etc., the position you would be offered(having a CCNA+CCNP certificate) would be equivalent to doing B.Tech( & having the same certificates). Plz. correct me if I am wrong. By The Way, why did you go for networking domain when there were seemingly better options ??

Hi
I am plain BSc (PCM) & MBA(from Sikkim Manipal Univ in Mktg) i am looking for mid-career change to IT.I was working in non-IT sales & have 4 yrs experience. Presently I am doing CCNA.Problem is I am 34+ age. Will that be a problem in getting a good job?Do i need BTech to get job in a good IT mnc ?

Champ

Will try to be very short as I can write pages on these topics

Unfortunately answers to ur all three question is YES

Reasons
1. Its not ur talent but average talent of group you belong to, for n/w jobs there is no big entry criteria, 12th pass + n/w certifications + some exp can land you a good job, for s/w good jobs at least B.Tech/MCA is required, so if you randomly pick 10 m/w engg's chances are 5 of them will be 12th pass only, so you are perceived in same way.

2. If you are working for consultancy firms such and TCS and Infy and not a core n/w company, most probly you will be in a supporting role i.e. u don't earn direct revenue for ur company rather help other projects in earning revenue by setting up n/w, making sure they run fine and by doing pan testing on servers. As u dont directly revenue respect is difficult to come and its harder to show ur accomplishments.

3. on top of that if u dont have a good degree to back you up, you will have to prove ur self again and again.

4. Yes job can be tedious and hetic as flow of work is not constant, there may be days when you dont have any pending tickets and not much to do, but when there will be any system changes or installation of new systems you might have to spend 2 days in office.

Everything said, its very hard to suppress talent for long and it you are good at what you do, sooner or later you will find success

but being every parameter similar same guy can enjoy easy life and get success easily if he chose s/w jobs instead of h/w ones

PS: Wrote everything in hurry but I am sure you will get what I am trying to state here

Well if you really is a guys who always fiddle with softwares and is very good at troubleshooting networking is for you. networking is a very good domain but you always need to be updated with latest tech both hardware and software.
if you join company like simens or sumtotal they are giving you 10L per annum.

Then you are my kind of guy welcome to networking Domain. But Suggest you go for 1 server OS +CCNA
server OS redhat or windows server

Well I have a few more questions-
Which is better career if compared in terms of career growth prospects, job satisfaction, money etc - Materials Management or IT Networking ?

Firstly I tell about myself in a little detail so that you can help me -I am 35 yo single man from Calcutta,India.I have done BSc(PCM) & recently i completed MBA(Mktg) from Sikkim Manipal Univ.I left my earlier job of Medical Representative as I didnt enjoy the job at all as I felt sales was not my cup of tea.I have only 4 yrs exp which i dont count as real experience(due to family business problems I dont want to get into details )Plus I couldn't meet the sales targets.
I have no particular liking for either field except that I want to earn good amount of money ,enjoy the job as well.
Plz suggest me which will be better? Is MM a tough job than networking?
Regards

I Don't have any knowledge about material management but if you have completed MBA then opt for material management.
MBA degree will help you a lot in MM.

If you like this networking field then go for it but the salary might increase after 2 yrs or else if you are craze about money then move as software engineers
