How to send free sms (whatsapp?)

am a newbie. is there anyway to send free sms texts using any app in android?
does whatsapp require the reciever to have installed the whatsapp application inorder to send sms to them?
any other app that doesnt require anything for the reciever?

WhatsApp isn‘t a SMS service. Its more of a SMS replcement
Way2sms app is the one to go for.

way2sms doesn't add extra text/add now...also every free sms app will need internet
