have many, some ideas:
use one syllable names, easy to remember
use 3 random letters... bmt, rgz
add x or xx to the names you really want, so xxgandalfxx if gandalf is taken
pick something obvious, my gm's gamertag is gamertag
keep your gamertag too common, then be ready for it to be reserved by someone else (unlikely you will get the same name in all games)
pick a name from in-game settings. so if there is a content update that gives warfather's heavy cannon, immideately reserve the name warfather

I use gameranand everywhere I can. Some places its taken so I usually take gameranand1 or 2 but nothing else than this.
