It's not just 3 of you but a lot of people who don't understand. One place to look at is *www.pathname.com/fhs/ . It explains how *nix file system is organised. For understanding partition structure and naming under linux *tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition/index.html
Few other things to look at(optional but recommended)
*en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Partition_(computing)
*tldp.org/HOWTO/Partition/fdisk_partitioning.html
*www.slackbook.org/html/installation-partitioning.html

First boot though live cd then post the output of
Code:
sudo fdisk -l
the above command list all your hard drives partions in linux way i.e hda1,hda2 hda3 and so on.
there is no c-drive or d-drive in linux;)

Surely it will take time for you to get used too the things linux way
meanwhile see this movie:grin:

ur system is jus fine to run ubuntu widout any frills. did u enable the desktop effects or something?

i've installed ubuntu 7.04 sans the compiz (Desktop effects) on 2 low end machines - p4 1.6ghz, 256mb (4mb shared ram on 845) and they are running fine out of the box.

^^ He asked you to boot using Live CD and type that command (in command line interface) and to post the output.

As explained by gary - the above command list all your hard drives partions in linux way i.e hda1,hda2 hda3 and so on.

It has been obseleted with the arrival of udev. Now, it is all done automatically using udev, hal and D-BUS, if I remember correctly.
