CD version is good when you have internet connection to download necessary softwares later. A DVD version contains extra softwares which you can use on a PC not connected to internet.

You mean how many distros? There are literally thousands available. You can even remaster a unique distro compilation for yourself. Since you're a beginner, stick with the usual suspects like the *buntu family (choose one depending on your requirements and system config).thx T159

which is advisable ... to download 500MB or to download 4GB in ubuntu ,GEU , mandriva ????? will be any performance difference and usage between ubuntu 500MB or 4GB ??
For Ubuntu download the CD ISO. There are no performance difference only the difference is in additional packages,,,
If you are looking for distros like OpenSUSE, Fedora, go for the DVD; the bundled choice of desktop environments makes it worth it...
@damngoodman999 - Negative. Do read what a Linux distribution (or distro) actually is, here.
^^Lol.. Thats hits per day.. Don't even gives you an idea of which popular distro is it .. Like someone ca make a script which can cast 100 hits /days.. or more and it would definitely add to popularity if you see DW for popularity...
