Bought a new harddisk(Seagate 80GB) a couple of days back. Installed Windows 98 SE
in it with a clean CD. There seems to be a Virus (the harddisk light is glowing intermitently) . I formatted the harddisk and installed the OS again.
Again the problem persists. The virus is corrupting all the installed software.
It seems it was already infected with a Boot Sector Virus.
What should I do? The vendor says he gave me a clean disk!!

Thanks in advance.
Any suggestion is welcome.

did you formated all the partitions or just formated the C? delete the partions and make new partitions. scan with a good A/V like kaspersky [perform the boot sector scan]. try to make the HDD 0 bytes...

if you knw the virus name, seach the removal tool...

Try formatting your hard disk completely and deleting all partitions and partitioning again. If that also doesnt seem to work try to Zero Fill your hard drive using Seagate's Utilities. Zero filling will kill everything on your disk but it will take around 3-4 hours.

In the zone
Use Seagate Diswizard to make a zero fill....

And delete all the partitions...

I would advice u to install 2k instead of 98

I have Win XP Pro but that's not bootable. so I have
to install 98 first and then install or upgrade to Win XP!!

I don't have Seagate Diskwizard !! What's zero-filling?
Some Computer experts here suggested taking a 'Rescue disk' using Norton AnitVirus from a clean PC,
and then boot the OS with it and rescue it. Norton will
overwrite the Virus with its contents!! This way the Virus
would go. But where do I go for a clean PC??

Is Seagate DiskWizard available from Seagate India?
I have Seagate HD with its Serial Number. Do they send you Segate Utilities thro post if you specify your
Serial No. to them?

Formatting & deleting the partition doesn't help either!!
Do anyone you have a clean PC with Norton installed?
If so then help me.
I heard Norton 2006 doesn't have 'rescue disk'!!

I saw Seagate's Website and it's review of
DiskWizard Starter Edition to eliminate viruses. I've also sent a mail to the Seagate support team.
Thank you all for your help.

Are you sure you have a virus in the first place? The hard-disk light glowing every now and then is pretty normal even if you are not interacting with the computer.

One word of advice: STAY AWAY FROM ANYTHING OLDER THAN win2k if you can. XP SP2 is your best bet.

I'm very sure. The Virus is corrupting all the Software
and producing lot of 'Fatal Exception's.
It's also corrupting the Registry.
I need to zerofill using Seagate DiskWizard Starter Edition.
