Hello friends,

I really need your help here. I am going to buy Playstation 2. Can you please clear some of my points.

1) I have a friend who is running a gamingzone were he has around 6-7 ps2 running, he says don't go for the slim model it really gives problems within 6-7 months and the greatest problem being the lens stop working. He says go for a older ps2(the fat one) which I will only get a second hand model as sony has stopped producing it.

2) If I get original ps2 from sony world, can I have it modded afterwards.

3) I have heard Lamington Road has max ps2 models made from ulasnagar is that true..if any one knows particular shop from were I can get a good moded ps2 model..atleast like its a orginal new one and then its modded at their end..I know modded one doesnt carry any warranty unfortunately..

Thanks people..Please do reply soon..need help :)

Not true at all.I have lots of friends who own the slim PS2 & haven’t had a single lens problem till now.It totall depends on how you use it & what kind of DVD’s you use in it.If you use those uber-scratched-to-death one’s then the lens is bound to get messed up.The FAT PS2 which your friend suggests is almost non-existent right now in the market.Getting a second hand one is not recommended as you might not know what the actual condition is like.I’d say go for the slim line model blindfolded.Trust me you would not want to be with a bulky box sitting there.

If by any chance you do get the FAT PS2 then yes you can mod it but the cost for modding it would be far more than the cost of an actual slim PS2 which would be a waste as you can save up that money for getting a Memory card & an additional controller. It’s better to get a pre-modded console itself.

I am not sure about Lamington road but Alfa & Heera Panna would easily have them(not the bulky models).

@allwyndlima thanks a lot for the rescue...I thought many of people here will reply or come to help..but its fine i have got all the answeres from you..thanks a lot for the help.

Do you mean to say I can get a modded PS2 from heera panna which would go good for me?

If I go for the ps2 slim through sony world..will that too cost a lot for modding after a period of time? I live in Nasik...so only option I have is Sony world..or else go to mumbai at heera panna

^^not shops!! Its a complete market which is aced(I never felt the difference but they say it is aced).Im sure you must have heard of Palika bazaar.

I am in bangalore dude... National Market aur SP Road hai na:p

and I first wanted some answers for questions more important - how feasable is it to use PS2 instead of DVD Player. Mod is only an Add-On(and a way to enjoy games which I can't do on this stupid PC on an LCD screen)

Your welcome pal. BTW what I meant to say was you could get slim PS2’s(pre-modded one’s) at Heera Panna or Alfa.Alfa is more preferred as they have a good reputation for selling import stuff out here in Mumbai. The only drawback is the place is darn crowded.

If you go for the original Sony PS2 from Sony world then they will be region locked to PAL which means you’ll need to insert only original PAL version DVD’s in them.So depending on which DVD’s you are going to purchase you’ll need to mod accordingly.Modding a original console separately is too time consuming & expensive.Which is why I suggested going for a pre-modded one in the first place. If I would be you then I wouldn’t want my brand new console to be ripped apart & then stuffed with a mod-chip.I would rather get it pre-modded & save the trouble.

Bottom line,
Original Console + Modding= Long way home
Pre-Modded console = Long story short & we all go home happily ever after.:)

@gautham:Using PS2 is a DVD player I wouldn't recommend it that much as if you don't have the DVD playback remote purchase separately it would be very painful to play those DVD's with that PS2 controller.Unless you like getting up every now & then to pause or play the movie.Slim does a neat job of playing those DVD's.

^Yes if you have a TV Tuner card with standard composite inputs it should work just fine. But do remember that the clarity obtained on a monitor is pathetic compared to a TV.

Yep that is one reason but it's something which is meant to be played on a big screen television & not a puny 17 inch or even a 19 inch Monitor. If you are planning to buy a PS2 then go for it only if you plan to game on a television & the rest if upto you.If you want to go for a graphic card then settle for nothing below 8800GT coupled with an equally good processor.Else the newer games will massacre lower end ones.If you won't be able to afford the card upgrade then PS2 is the way to go.It still has games support remember.;)
