Type about:config in the firefox address bar, modify or create a new boolean key called browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs and set it to true. Now go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Tabbed browsing and set it to "Force links that open a new window to open a new tab".

There is also an extension which will do this for you ...

use an extension called TabMix Plus(search in extensionmirror)...it has an option to force opening links that would otherwise open in windows in new tabs!

Forcing links to open in a new tab instead of a new window:
1. browser.tabs.showSingleWindowModePrefs in about:config
Change it to true from false.
2. Then check this:

I had this doubt some 4-5 months back and got support at Neowin.

The image is not displayed as you have pasted a image that is can't be used for forum display. It's for showing to your friends or others and have your image rated.
Notice this:( the "?" and the my.ph)

Regarding the tab thing, I am not sure what's your problem.
Try to delete the present profile and create a new one and see how it goes abt.
OR
Install the TabMix Plus extension.
