Smart homes may become a reality soon

KOLKATA: Remember all those stories about remote-controlled gadgets at home. These have remained dreams for Indians. Not any more. Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) is all set to install and test a killer application that will offer broadband speeds of at least 500 mbps (250 time the current speed) to homes through fibre optics network in Kolkata. Such speeds will be the basic enabler for these dream technologies.

Currently, BSNL offers a broadband speed of 2 mbps that can be stretched to 16 mbps allowing limited internet-based value added services like gaming and steaming video. Mbps is the speed at which a certain volume of data travels every second. Faster speeds help run more intelligent applications.

BSNL is currently working on two technologies. One that will offer speeds of 100 mbps and the other that will allow at least 500 mbps. The 100 mbps project will allow users to make his/her entire house a local area network on which all gadgets like TV, refrigerator, washing machine, micro-wave, gizzard, water filter or the lock at the main door and the gate will be connected. All these can be controlled remotely through a wireless gadget like the cell phone or any other handheld devices.

And how many years should we dream about this..??

First...this seems to be a typo.:p. Anyway, this will not work now in a middle class society like India. Who will want TV, refrigerator, washing machine, micro-wave, gizzard, water filter or the lock at the main door, gate to be controlled by computer? This will require everything at home to be hi-tech and we can't afford that. Who will install the technology to remote control the washing machine, fridge, etc? Those BSNL guys who come to our home and can't even install/troubleshoot a simple ADSL modem? Come on...We HAVE to stop dreaming. Who will create the master controls to control all the devices?

All this is a dream even here in US. First give us people in India all high speed unlimited connections and then allow BSNL to talk hi-tech. They can't even solve a simple billing issue and...well I stop here...:D:p. AT & T gives ADSL unltd connection here at around $20-$25 per month. Speed-1.5Mbps. Cable internet's highest speed they advertise here is 10mbps. All packages are unltd here. Let alone 500Mbps? Huh...Make all connections unltd and affordable and then let BSNL talk..I hate them.. Speed should be at least 1Mbps in India.:)

talk about rubbish... they may be working on LINES that can carry data @ 500mbps, but certainly not 500mbps for each home. These lines may propably conect to houses like 10000 houses per line.

900 for 256 unlimited is actually enough for me :p probably a 2mbps unlimited at same price is welcome but anything more is an overkill.
