Hi,
Windows Xp is downloading updates on its own without my permission even though i have set Automatic updates to "Notify Me or don't Automatically download or install them."The problem is i am not a limited connection and i get charged for extra download @Rs0.8per MB. so this automatic updates it proving costly for me:x

OS:

How do i stop this?

The most foolproof method is to disable the Automatic Updates service altogether and start it only when you want to run Windows Update. Click Start->Run and type 'services.msc' without the quotes. Now look for Automatic Updates and dbl-clk to open its properties, where you'll need to set the startup type to 'disabled'. Do the same for Background Intelligent Transfer Service. The next time you need to update, set the startup type for BITS & Auto Update to 'automatic' and start them (in this order - BITS first, then Auto Update).

I second Kl@w-24's suggestion to turn off auto-update altogether. Perhaps an easier way to access that is to right-click My Computer and go to Properties, click Automatic Updates tab and select "Turn off Automatic Updates". This way, I'm never bothered by auto updates.

Okay, Turn off automatic updates but then the security center was pissing me off.
so i went to services.msc and disabled security center & automatic updates service.

But that not a point of this thread, my point was is it my Computer or its owned by windows 's devs. as it does not listen to me:|

Well actually it's following your instructions to just check for updates and display them. It won't download any updates until you manually order it to do so. You're probably confused due to the 'Install' button, thinking that WU has already downloaded the updates and only the installation is left. That's not the case. When you click 'Install', the updates will be downloaded one by one and then installed on your computer.

Legen-wait for it-dary!
^^ No, that kind of shutdown screen appears only when the download is complete and only install is remaining.

I second this.
If u have selected the option of "Never Check for Updates" ... it will not download and install updates by itself.
But I think u have selected the option of "Download Updates but let me select whether to install them".

First thing which I do after XP installation is to disable security center, windows firewall, windows updates, print spooler(as I dnt have a printer) and other such junk services. :p
