Radeon HD 4890 Overclocked To 1.2GHz

When the ATI Radeon HD 4890 launched earlier this month, everyone knew that it would only be a matter of time before the 1GHz core clock speed was achieved in the overclocking community and it did come rather quickly. After all, a 150MHz increase isn't much these days given the vast array of air and water cooling products on the market.

Now overclockers are getting a little more in depth with the 4890 and starting to push it a little bit further with some of the more extreme forms of cooling, liquid nitrogen and dry
ice. So far liquid nitrogen has enabled the card to be pushed to 1.13GHz with a modest voltage increase.

Dry ice has proven to be a little more effective, raising stable clock speeds to 1.2GHz with a
voltage of 1.425V. ATI's Catalyst Control Center won't allow the GPU to go faster than 1GHz even, but VR-Zone has a very useful guide on just how to get the voltage a little higher in case you are thinking about giving it a shot.

Whoa, 1.2 Ghz . But I doubt whether normal users can do this. Where r they going to get liquid nitrogen and dry ice.

^^^ The highest that normal user can go to is :-

- Sapphire HD4890 OC (901 MHz Core, 4000 MHz memory)
- Overclock - 990MHz Core!!, 4600MHz memory

Intel OCer
nice OC results...but this is something normal users can never do for 24x7 use, so theres no point in it beating the gtx285...

^^Very true, and anywayz, the power consumption wud be outrageous.

Recently I came to know why Sapphire's HD4890 OC(stock 901MHz core, 4GHz memory) was OCed to Core 990Mhz, cuz it came with a 1x8pin and 1x6pin power connectors.

wow!! first time seeing a GPU above the 1GHz.

btw lets see wat the ATi 58xx series and 47xx series can do with their 40nm fab.

HD 47xx will easily beat:-

HD 4830 512MB - HD 4750
HD 4850 512MB/1GB - HD 4770
GTS 250 512MB/1GB - HD 4770

I expect enormous OC potential, especially with the low TDP, you'll have loads of room for OC, thnx to the barely needed 6pin connector.

Now, waiting for HD4770.

THat card has:-

750MHz Core
3200MHz Memory

If we just bump Core to 850MHz(shud be cake) and memory to 4400MHz(4000MHz is the rated speed for the memory!!), this card will beat any GTS 250 be it 1GB or 512MB, cuz there's practically no difference in performance between a 9800GTX+ 512MB and a GTS 250 1GB.
Four words - BYE BYE nVidia(again)
