1) What is your budget? (INR or USD)

2) What size & weight consideration (if any) would you prefer?

a. Netbook; 10” screen or less
b. Ultraportable; 11" - 12” screen
c. Thin and Light; 13" - 14" screen
d. Mainstream; 15" - 16" screen
e. Desktop Replacement; 17"+ screen


3) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
a. Like:lenovo,sony,hp
b. Dislike:dell,samsung


4) What are the primary tasks will you be performing with this notebook?
programming,mid-range gaming and other general stuff


5) What screen resolution(s) & type (glossy/matte) would you prefer?


6) Anything else you would like to say? (eg: local purchase, ASS,matte/glossy finish)
portability is of prime concern to me..

PS-how good is the lenovo u310 ultrabook?

If you are looking for Ultrabooks,increase your budget and buy the new 11inch MBA or hp Folio.

If you want a sleek and thin notebook or in other words an ultrabook, there are better options than vaio.

I would like to recommend the hp envy ultrabook series as they built solidly and comes with a wide variety of configs as per budget.

At your budget, check the following:

HP Envy 4-1037TX Laptop

Comes with a core i5 3rd gen ulv processor and 7670m graphics. At your budget, this seems to be the best option and gives you exactly what you want. Also expect phenomenal battery backup around more than 7 hrs.

Users get only 5-5.5 hrs on the new envy 4 and 5. HP went overboard with battery claim of 9hrs

^^ Its a better option than vaio at that price. Battery backup depends on the usage pattern of a user and its variable.

Besides, it has a ulv processor and therefore expect better battery backup than envy laptops without ulv processors. I think you're talking about the latter.

No I am talking abt the one with ULV. I think it has a 4 cell battery. Maybe thats the culprit

If you noticed, his usage requires more than just a ULV processor. So I would not suggest an ultrabook to him.
Vaio S13 is both powerful and light with good battery life. There is no comparison between a ULV i5 and full power i5 especially for programming and other tasks.

^^ Ulv's are far more than enough to work with IDE's like eclipse, netbeans, microsoft vc++, phonegap and lot others. And its an ivybridge i5 ulv which is no slouch. Don't get fooled by the low clockspeeds.

What about his midrange gaming requirements? Will the vaio's hd 4000 match a 7670m?? I seriously don't think so.

Don't go for that vaio as there are other much better options. Check the following model and credit goes to "har" for finding an amazing piece of hardware. At 50k, its a worthy purchase.

Samsung NP550P5C-S01IN

It looks sleek enough to me and comes with a power kepler based gt 650m and ivybridge i5(non ulv). The rest of the specs are very impressive as well. There's also an i7 model with a blueray drive for 6-7k more if your willing to spend more. But this looks by far the best of them all.

Thanks for your suggestions.HP seems like a good option among these.
Another thing that i want to ask is about the after sales support of samsung(as i haven't heard good reviews about the same)

And i still got no response regarding the lenovo u310 ultrabook..please shed some light...

^^ Personally i hate lenovo. But here in tdf, personal reasons hardly matter and iif one product is recommended over another, there should be technical justifications.

Here is your lenovo u310:

It comes with the same i5 ulv cpu as the hp but doesn't sport the 7670m that hp provides. Besides it doesn't look that good. Honestly, the hp looks and feels like a true ultrabook with better specs at almost same pricepoint.

Go for either the samsung or the hp ultrabook.

I think that an MBA 11 inch would suit you well. Though you are not going to be able to do much of your regular stuff if you have been so used to windows already, you could pretty much be familiar with it. I have taken the jump to a Mac way back in 2008 and have never looked back, since then. Though you have to make do with what is available here just like that.
