Right off the assembly line
Hi,

I just purchased a new Seagate 500gb harddisk. Ive made it into 4 partitions during the win xp installer. I tried a quick format....it jumped to 20% in like 4-5 seconds and got stuck for 15+ mins, i got annoyed reset my pc, deleted all partitions, and tried again with a new 20gb partition. Same thing happened. Then i tried a normal format and its taking insanely long aswell. Its been 4 hours and its only done 50% so far, this is for a 20gb partition bear in mind. Is my hdd bad? Its brand new.

Nevermind issue resolved, i didnt realize that its making a clicking noise, after checking this out on various sites, its a sign that ive got a defective hdd, ill just have it replaced.

Looks like it has factory made bad sectors ... lol...
Ok now serious :

When a HDD gets shipped from a factory - there r chances that there may be bad sectors present in it before even using it. Yes its true! ....chances r very low though. Also the hdd has internal function to re-map those bad sectors at hardware level ... this too has a limit. It can re-map very few bad sectors after that windows will get hold of it and will report it. If u can quick format ur hdd try " chkdsk <drv>: /r " and see if windows reports some bad sectors.

Also did i forget to say that instead of doing the above crap JUST REPLACE UR HDD - ITS DAMAGED!!!
