Sony is reportedly preparing for another round of PlayStation 3 price cuts, as the company prepares for the release of the newest Madden NFL game from Electronic Arts.

The video game is scheduled for an Aug. 18 release, with a $100 PS3 price cut expected starting on Aug. 1. It's most likely a mid-August price cut up will take place around one week before the game is released, though that hasn't been confirmed as of yet.

The higher price tag on the PS3 has caused it to lag in sales numbers compared to the Microsoft Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii game consoles. Despite powerful hardware and a built-in Blu-ray player, the lack of an intriguing game catalog has hurt global sales figures.

The 80GB PS3 game console costs $399.99, while a 60GB Xbox 360 is available for $300, with the Wii available for $249. Both Sony and Microsoft have slashed prices on several occasions, however, Nintendo hasn't been forced to cut prices.

As the game catalog widens, a cheaper PS3 could finally help woo consumers who are looking for both a game console and entertainment center. I've been happy with the Xbox 360 and Wii, but a lower-priced PS3 certainly intrigues me.

Until then, it's likely console sales for the month of May continued a slide the video game industry hopes to turn around with lower hardware prices.

If the PS3 receives a $100 price cut next month, is that enough to convince you to purchase one?

this won't happen. PS# is anyways selling for a loss/unit by SOny. Sony can't cut the price. Instead they are gonna intro a new PS3 slim with smaller and more efficient components to replace the older PS3 and then there is a possibility of some price cuts, but not 100$ LOL.
