I hav XP and i want to download something from the internet but a box show tht it is connecting to tht site but download never begins. wat can be the prob! ?

i have got 512 mb system ram, but still after installing a few softwares and the drivers on a freshly installed windows xp installation, the boot process becomes extermely slow. most of the times, after logging in, no icon on the desktop or start menu remain clickable...they kind of stop...
