There are some wmv video files that I need to convert into mpg (mpg-2) or similar (NTSC-DVD or NTSC-VCD) formats. To convert there are two softwares, one is the super and other is ulead video studio. Conversion using the former results in poorer quality but the latter takes at least 4 hours to convert a 40MB wmv and results in 800MB mpg file.

Is there an alternative to this mess?
Why does it take so long?
Are there any FREEWARE to do the same job more quickly but retaining the quality?

dude, just use SUPER.

but remember to "configure" it properly. You are getting an 800mb file and taking a long time because you set the bitrate to too high an amount. Its not the GUI(super) or the Encoder(FFMPEG) which is at fault. You just forgot to set the output properly.

Thank you for the reply. I missed the point here. As you mentioned it all depends on the bitrate, After I went through the basic of video at www.videohelp.com and the brief tutorial at *forum.videohelp.com/images/guides/p1608146/basicsuperguide.pdf I now know how to configure video conversions.

Thanks once again!

no problem.

but go to Doom9's Forum to learn more about video
and go to HydrogenAudio to learn more about audio
Check wikipedia search to study up on theory topics

the sites contain stuff to mould anybody to a pro. I learnt everything about audio and video there. The forums in each site rock, but the doom9 guys have this sense of 1337ness due to which they thrash newbies without much reason. So I quit it; the exessive big headedness pissed me off. But its still a good place to learn stuff. Hydrogen Audio is awssome though.
