The first news of this year's Google I/O is a new initiative that the company calls Android One. The smartphone program strives to provide a unified feature set tailored-made for the market the phone is launching in.

The first smartphone to be part of the Android One comes from Micromax, one of the most popular smartphone brands in India. Its Android One smartphone packs features that are most important for users there. Those are FM Radio, Dual SIM support, microSD card and a low price.

The Micromax smartphone from Android One will cost under $100 - cheaper than the Motorola Moto E. The new smartphone also packs a 4.5" display, but Sundar Pichai didn't specify neither its resolution, nor further specifications.
The Android One program guarantees that the phones that come out of it will run on the most recent Android release, as Google will push updates to those phones similar to the way it handles GPE devices.

Sundar Pichai shared that besides Micromax, phone makers Spice and Karbonn are also taking part in Android One.

Allllright !
Looks like Indians have completely taken over Google.
Three speakers today (Sundar Pichai, Avni Shah, Rishi Chandra) were Indians..
Now this partnership for Android One with Indian "manufacturers". Unbelievable..

Well done, Indians at Google, we are proud. ☺

BTW Android One features look awesome :

Well feeling proud is a different thing, and using Micromax, Karbonn, Spice and expecting them to behave live Samsung / LG (Nexus) is completely different.

I'm not sure, whether these Indian manufacturers will be able to handle GPE devices. I mean the quality, service etc.

The main point is these manufacturers generally imports the Chinese chips and that's why the price is always lower than International Manufacturers.

I'm feeling so happy, at last India got some attention, Sundar Pichai did a great job there. With the added effort from google these players will certainly improve their service.

Plus I wish they also add XOLO to their android one list, they make some serious devices alteast better than Spice and Karbonn if not micromax.

Others also use made in Chinese parts but they strictly follows the quality control and have good after sales service that's why we like them

Well the thing is Android one is made for people who can't afford expensive phones or rather don't see the point in buying an expensive phone. I don't think that tech savvy people like us would get this as our daily driver so the hardware specs on this doesn't matter as much as the end-user experience does.

Another thing is that Sundar Pichai mentioned that just 10% of Indians use smartphones. Maybe that's true but that doesn't change the fact that we're still the 2nd largest mobile market in the world, soon to become the largest. So cheap products for all is good, but even we want the fancy latest GPE devices and Android wearables.

Ohh great news! LG G watch and Samsung Gear Live now available for pre-order in India. Good job Googs :)

i really like Xolo the best as a company.. they are up for everything.. they are the first ones to try new and different products..
they were the first indian manufacturer to use intel, snapdragon , tegra Processors while everyone was giving the same old mediatek

Plus the tegra note tablet .. + the first Indian TDD 4g mobile as well

+ the 10.1 inch Amd powered Windows 8 tablet

Is there any difference in their service standards? Putting products into the market is one thing but peace of mind comes only from accessible service.

They should ideally follow what Ajanta did with ORPAT. They introduced low priced products under ORPAT brand. Of course the quality was iffy but their service policy was no questions asked replacement during warranty. I got an alarm clock replaced even without bill/warranty certificate. Considering that Android has a high degree of portability thanks to Google backend it is easy to do this even for consumers.

Xolo also generally has better design / build among Indian brands.

Android One from Xolo with a no questions asked replacement policy will be killer.

(Are Xolo and Lava different brands of the same group?)

Good to know Indian companies are moving ahead Only if they provide better service that would be great for everybody.

There is no Chinese Chip Mediatek is a Taiwanese company just like Intel V/s AMD its Qualcomm v/s Mediatek in mobile platform. Performance of Mediatek chips are not bad considering their price.

Yeah, actually that's what I meant to say. So what about the A.S.S. of these Indian manufacturers?

There is no Chinese Chip Mediatek is a Taiwanese company just like Intel V/s AMD its Qualcomm v/s Mediatek in mobile platform. Performance of Mediatek chips are not bad considering their price.

But I feel, Qualcomm is of much better quality.

^Actually there is no difference between chip made by Qualcomm or Mediatek they uses same procedure and technique for manufacturing them People hate mediatek not for chip but for build quality and buggy roms used by Indian companies.

Regarding Mediatek
MT6732 - MediaTek

Another reason is lack of developer support arising out of not releasing proper sources.
