Needed : A good overall config for ~ 50K

Hi Guys!

I'm looking to buy a system for arnd 50k, One option I had was to go the branded way.... potentially get a Dell XPS 8300 for 58K (i5 2310, 24" monitor, 1 gig 6770)

Here's the questionnaire :

1. What is the purpose of the computer? (Note: If you are planning to say multimedia, you will have to be more specific as all types of systems are capable of doing that)
A:Multimedia, Gaming, Development, Graphics Designing, pretty much everything a PC does (I'm a computer enthusiast ;-) )

2. Are you open to alternate ideas/products giving similar better performance but offering more VFM/ sellers? If not- why?
A: Yep Totally! Budget is not a strict constraint till I get better VFM :)

3. What is your MAX budget?
A: 50-60k, I plan to use it for the next three years and then buy a new system (when I graduate, so don't wanna spend too much right now....)

4. Planning to overclock?
A: not quite...

5. Which OS are you planning to use?
A: Windows 7, Ubuntu

6. How much hard drive space is needed?
A: 1 TB should be good.... though can settle for less (/ more :p)

7. What resolution will the screen run at & whats the size of the screen you want? If you already want have one and want to use it, mention its resolution and size.
A:22" plus...... I do graphics designing in Photoshop, Cinema 4D et al. so picture clarity is kinda important (and full HD is just plain awesome for gaming and movies :p)

8. How would you rate your hardware knowledge from the count of 1-10? (1 being the lowest, 5 being you are somewhat in sync with the current performers and 10 being the highest)
A: 8 - did helluva research into computer technologies a while back(x86, DRAM gap ..... the whole shebang )..... though might not be totally updated with regards to current gen consumer hardware

9. Have you ever built a desktop before or will this be done by an assembler?
A: Potentially a assembler...... don't wanna get hands dirty

10. When are you planning to buy the system?
A: within 1-3 weeks

11. Are you one of the types looking out for "future proof" configurations?
A: for 1-2 years...... have lived with shitty configs before (ran XP on a Celeron 300MHz with 128MB RAM :)) so isn't a real big deal

12. Are there going to be any components that you don't want to include in this new rig? If yes, do mention.
A:want everything except speakers

13. Which city do you live in and are you open to buying from shops from other city/states?
A:Delhi..... North Delhi specifically, best if the dealer be nearby

14. Mention any other points if deemed necessary
A:Looking for a overall stable system for heavy task as well as overnight downloads... hoping to get a good one for arnd 50k

oh P.S. : A full HD monitor and a sturdy cabinet would be nice

here is the June 2011 Buying guide for 50k (and my comments on them)
Component Make Price
Processor Intel Core i5 2500..................................10000 (seems epic, but dosen't 2310 give better VFM??)
Motherboard Intel DH67VR-B3.............................4800 (no clue)
RAM G.Skill Ripjaws F3-12800CL9S-4GBRL................2200 (what about 6GB kit? though fine with 4GB)
Graphic Card Sapphire HD6870...........................11200 (better brand maybe?)
HDD Seagate 500GB 7200.12/ WDC 500GB Blue.........1700(7200RPM is good.... wht abt a TB drive)
DVD Writer LG 22X SATA DVD.................................... 900 (nobody bothers about this anymore :p..... so good enuff)
PSU Corsair GS600.................................................4000 (good enuff I guess)
Case CM Elite 430....................................................2500 (seems decent)
Monitor Benq G2220HD........................................7200 (eh..... can I get a 24" one?)
Mouse and Keyboard Razer Cyclosa Gaming Bundl......2000 (a simpler set would do....if it reduces the price)
Mouse Pad Razer Goliathus..........................................400 (no need)
UPS APC 800VA ......................................................2800 (I hope it's good..... really hoping for a stable UPS..... lost days of work because of faulty UPS before!)
Speakers Logitech Z313...........................................1000 (not planning on getting speakers just yet) (will get one arnd 2-3k when dad gets over this expenditure :p :D)

i think you have summed everything pretty well and there is not much scope of discussion here. Regarding some of your doubts, Sapphire is a very good brand and a lot of forum members, including me, are using Sapphire products without any issues. The best thing is they provide Custom Coolers even with their Baseline models of a card which provides better cooling and more overclocking potential.
For 24" display, you can get Benq G2420 LCD Monitor @ 11.4K. This is the cheapest yet a very good performer.

For processor, 2500 is the VFM as well as performance king in sub 10K price range. And I don't think there is any Desktop processor called Core i3 2310. It is basically Core i3 2310M and a Notebook processor. But it simply can't even come far to the 2500.

2nd generation Core i3/i5/i7 processors based on Sandybridge architecture come with dual channel memory controller. So our suggestion is 2 X N GB module, not 3 X N GB. However, the ram present in the config is a single 4 GB stick as 4 GB is now today;s standard module size.

For gaming, a good set of gaming Keyboard and Mouse will change tour experience.

You can get a 1 TB Drive @ 2.7K. Both Seagate and WD are trustworthy.

Since budget is not a strict concern, try to get a HD 6950 2 GB from Sapphire. Price is around 15K. Other suggestion is go for a Core i7 2600 processor @ 14.5K. This processor is having Hyper Threading enabled, resulting 8 logical cores and 8 threads processing capability simultaneously. The kind of applications you've mentioned will be heavily benefited from 2600 processor.

I asked a shop about the prices...... here's what I'm getting :

Core i5 2500 @ 9500
Intel DH67BL @4952
1TB Western Digital @2452
Corsair RAM 4GB with heatsink @ 2400 (I'm guessing it's a dominator 1600MHz)
Sony DVD burner @ 1100
Corsair 600W @ 3890
ATI 6870 1GB Saphire @ 10500
BenQ V2420 24" @ 13500
APC 650VA @ 2847

Case wasn't available at that time so the price wasn't quoted....rest of the peripherals I'll get later

So I have a few questions : firstly, as my RAM is of 1600MHz but the current mobo suppors only uptill 1333 MHz, is there any reliable motherboard (preferably ATX) that supports 1600MHz RAM? My budget for mobo is arnd 5-6k

also, would APC 650VA suffice or should I try for more?

Core i5 2500 @ 9.5k
Intel DH67BL @ 4.9k
Corsair Vengeance 4 GB @ 2.5K
Sapphire HD 6870 1GB GDDR5 VAPOR-X @ 12k
Corsair GS 600W @ 4.8k
CoolerMaster CM690 @ 4.2k
BenQ G2220HDL FULL HD LED @ 8.5k
Seagate 1TB @ 2.7k
Logitech MX 518 @ 1.4k or Razer Abyssus @ 1.4k
MS Comfort Curve 2000 @ 1.1k
LG 22x DVD RW @ 1k

Extremely balanced rig. You can add the 24", but just think if the 1.5" is worth 3k.

Get the Intel DH67VR mobo, street price is just 4.5K now a days. And the Corsair 4 GB 1600 MHz is ram is Vengeance, dominator is far more costly. But since the maximum ram speed support is 1333 MHz is the mobo, you can get normal Corsair 1 X 4 GB 1333 MHz value ram @ 2K.

Comp@ddict, I think there is typo in the GS600 price, it is 3.8K, not 4.8K. For Monitor, get Dell ST2220M Full HD LED display (DVI-D) @ 8.1k.

Alright I guess I'm gonna go for this config only (with slight modification if required...)

One thing I wanted to ask..... my PC is gonna be put under some real heavy load (IMO, one time it took over 6 hours to render a image in C4D)... + I'm a heavy downloader, so the PC's on for 1 day or so at a streach..... I'm gonna be investing in a pair of fans for the CM Elite 430..... but is liquid cooling required for the system??

Oh and secondly.... ATX mobo available at 5-7k??

god,, that you don't have any problems with the aforementioned monitor.

LOL! :p

anywho.... I had one major query (along with a few provious ones that went unanswered...bleh...)

Do all these components play nice with Linux/Ubuntu?? It's gonna be my dev OS and kinda important that these parts play well with it....

heard DH67BL has some problems with Linux...

Even I don't have any problems with my ST2220M :D . I think the review that mentioned backlight bleeding might have been a one off issue.

@OP never heard of a motherboard problem with linux, usually all core components run without any issue.

^^ one exception cannot rule out general consensus

Buddy jas is right. st2220l is a very good 22 incher. It was the 2320l that had bad reviews and wasn't recommended. It had bleeding and other issues.

If you wanna do development in linux environment, then i suggest nvidia gpu's. Heard they have better drivers for linux than their competitor.

You can go for msi gtx 560-ti twin frozr II @ 13.5k or MSI GTX 560 hawk @ 14.5k.

Okay grab the monitor which looks better to you (i mean aesthetically)

YOu wont have any problems with that config for any Linux game or app I guarantee you, whether it be nVidia GPU or AMD GPU.

Ya, AMD drivers have been improved a lot with the catalyst 11 series release and it is mentioned in Wikipedia that for most instances the drivers are considered to be solid enough for most tasks and functional for most users .
