Windows 7 RTM Cracked With OEM License Key

Well, that didn't take long.

With every release of Windows is the inevitable race by the pirate community to crack it. Even with activation schemes, which make things considerably more challenging, hackers were able to find a way to activate Windows Vista with a special OEM key. This very same hack has now made its way to activate Windows 7 RTM.

Such a key allows OEMs to pre-activate machines – something definitely not meant for the consumer market. The OEM activation system relies on a special BIOS that identifies itself to Windows. A software hack is all that's required to fool Windows into thinking that any machine is an authorized one that can be activated using the OEM license key.

The OEM license key this time around was extracted from a Windows 7 Ultimate DVD image from Lenovo, which contained the data that hackers needed to make the activation tools.

This type of hack is particularly difficult for Microsoft to stop because it means that it would lock out and greatly inconvenience Windows 7 integration processes already underway at one of its OEM partners – in this case, Lenovo.

Microsoft wasn't able to block out the OEM BIOS hack for Windows Vista until it released Service Pack 1, leading us to suspect that the same could apply for Windows 7.

^ they can do one thing. Reducing the prices....

the sold copies will be less than 20000 if they keep their prices at this rate. If they reduce the prices to 999 or 1499, 50-70% of the Operating Systems will be legit then.

^Your argument about price is flawed.
Just look at Audio Cds prices and its so cheap and yet we download from torrents, isnt it? The same for DVDs.

Well Rahim you are partially right.
The price of audio cds and DVDs has taken so long to come down to this level. They were too slow. If they had reacted fast enough a lot of the general population would still be buying legit. The problem now is so acute, people buy pirated cds of devotional songs :p Talk about right and wrong !

Looks like Microsoft too will learn it's lesson too late.

those who do sensitive stuff like accessing bank accounts etc, better not download these leaked builds and use genuine builds from MS.

You never know what is running in the background.

Agree. But there is something which I call "Trusted Pirates" ;-) You can stay safe with them.

OnTopic - Yeh toh hona hi tha. I was expecting it.
P.S - I won't use Win 7, so this news doesn't matters much to me. GNU/Linux is good enough for me. :)

At last the devil is here
If piracy wouldnot have been there windows would have been priced near 20k... :D

why not microsoft allow free downloads windows 7 and place ad banners / click banners etc etd..to get income from it.. atleast we can click on those banners and pay microsoft the amount which they charge for their OS's.

@vamsikrishna919: as you stated even if the os is going to cost 999/- people will still be interested in downloaded stuff. (most of the game titles are available for 199/- but still people download it and use a patch for it.

and i agree for what @NucleusKore has said.

it is now or never for MS. (but i think they wont care about it).

it's better to pay 1lac than to get annoying ads.

Imagine you doing important presentation in office and a KFC banner comes up!!!!!

and yes they cared and hence they

1) removed all those unwanted apps (mail messenger etc)
2) reduced memory footprint of OS
3) added lot of support for drivers
4) made the navigation much easier
5) made UAC almost invisible

The Vista OEM BIOS hack was even not stopped after SP1, or WTH, after SP2. The Hack was updated with a specially crafted bootloader called grldr which chain loads ntldr in such a way that the hack works even in SP1 and SP2. :) BTW, i use genuine Dell OEM Vista Home Premium now. But used it once in the beginning :D

wrong comparison
CD-DVD are standalone - you don't any support or updates on that. Whereas OS is the critical part of a computer system - we need support-patch-updates-hotfix-future upgrade etc. An attractive price point will defiantly help pushing people to buy a legit copy.If M$ release the Win 7 Ultimate at a price of point of 3k - it will be an sure shot

as for cd/dvd business don't think itune like business model will work well - digital distribution is the best thing - if priced well with right managed DRM. I hope Piratebay will come with some attractive business plan where people can get media at right price - why not they sell ripped dvd media(movies/video) at a reasonable low rate -which can be download - less bandwidth - it will super attractive

^^ If they have some kind of contract with the original owner of the contents then it should be legit :p

I don't think they know about vista sp1 &sp2 bios emulation crack method. If they do they would never say M$ able to block OEm bios hack with SP1 :p

I will use firewall\hack to block just the ads in that case.. and if it does not work, remove the Win 7 from my system leaving only Ubuntu (there is only Ubuntu Now but maybe i'd install Win7 once if it were free of charge)...
