Go with Sujay's Suggestion.
If you have windows Xp with SP2 or SP1 cd. install it and without turning on auto updates ,download Service pack 3 directly and install it.
And for the updates after sp3 or bug fixes by microsoft for Xp OS,you have to let it auto update .
You can also download them manually ,just check the the number ( Kb*** ) something like that at the end of each update listed in/by the windows update, type that no. on google and type download after that no. and then click search, you will get the download link for that update from topmost link(of microsoft website) of the displayed google search result.

^^ 50Gb vs 500Gb, you choose. nope. faster if no bandwidth is being consumed in the background. but i'll suggest install SP2 instead of SP3. SP3 is buggy. some updates may have fixed the buggy & incompatible nature but not sure.
