Vista will run on three year old PCs but it will run incredibly slow. It will run slow on anything less than 1.5 GB of RAM and dedicated graphics card.

1.5 GB, yo....get real & try using it properly. I m using it with 1 GB RAM fine, even multitasking (Browsing in firefox, music & chating while rendering in 3Ds Max 9) & get out of misconception that it will run slow without a graphics card

you can run vista for 120 days without entering a key, legally ;)

Had Microsoft kept the price a lot lesser, it would have certainly sold much better in india. Hm like say Rs.10000 for Ultimate would have been too much of a tempting offer , atleast for me :D

am planning to take Basic Edition & enable Aero Glass..Well how much is the cost of Basic Version & home Premium???Anyone??

Do net get Home Basic if aero is your requirment. Home basic has no support for Aero. Get home premium

ya I know about aero not being in Vista Basic as default but there is a registry loophole in Home basic through which u can get Aero working ....that was the reason I was asking about Home basic...

Agar illegal kaam karna hi hai to khareed hi kyun raha hai, bhaai! :p

And I thought we were having a discussion pretty amicably. If you don't want to, it's your choice. I am not very interested in listening to lectures anyway. :)

That registry tweak doesn't work with all the graphics card out there

First thing is...It is just simple registry editing & I think it is not illegal...well about the discussion.. what u said was true.. but what I meant was that even if I lecture u,the outcomewill be..there is as good as a possibility of lifeforms on Moon(about u switching to Vista) & there is as good possibility of me owning Apple(me switching to Mac)...No offence meant ..hehe

@saurav
Oh didnt know that...damn...then nothing but Home premium I guess..My crappy luck...

It runs fine even on a 512 MB RAM system with a considerably powerful processor, but I disagree on your point that it will not run slow even without a graphics card. I tried it both with and without a graphics card. (Board's 945, and card's Fx 5200, both bare minimums) If you run aero, seperate vRAM does make a staggering change in the window manager's responsiveness.

Vista runs fine with onboard graphics and aero enabled (tested on Intel 945). But memory requiremts is a bit steep. 512MB is bare minumum. Its like running Win XP with 128MB RAM. It will run but will be sluggish.

Right as you are, try it now with a card instead of the 945 onboard. A 512 would suffice then. Cause Aero uses the vRAM alone and leaves your RAM free.

I ran it on a system that has the nVidia 6600GT 256MB graphics card installed and has 512 MB of RAM. It has the Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz processor.

Though it runs fine with Aero enabled, it is painfully slow.

A few things, Which version of Vista was it? Did you installed final RTM compatible drivers with it? What chipset was it?

I am upgrading my Vista RTM user review thread. With working 3ds Max & After effect 7, i m now switching to Windows Vista compleately with Windows XP only in VM

I always try the latest betas of software, like to be on the cutting edge. And on my PC, I cannot install Mac OS X and I don't really like using Linux, so Vista is the next best thing. I won't use it, after all - it will be my brother. (Though he is clamouring for an iMac after having used Mac OS X at Mayo College and on my MacBook Pro. )
And I don't want to make ignorant posts about other operating systems so I use them before commenting on them, unlike most other people here. :)

It is the Vista RC1. Will the final release run faster? I did not install it because I thought it wouldn't really make any difference in performance.

tarey_g

Hanging, since 2004..
RC1 and the final build have a huge difference in performance. And the system you installed vista on is a good enough system for vista coz i had the same system some days ago and vista was fine on it.

Currently i have a AMD Athlon x2 3600+ with Asus M2N-MX board and 512 MB DDR2 and it runs vista fine. I recommend to get 1 GB RAM but it still runs fine on 512 . As i have a PC it will be easy for me to go to the market any day i have cash in my pocket, and spend 2000/- for a extra 512MB stick. Modular upgrading , thats what i like to do. Next thing for me :D is to get a graphis card of my choice (Mid/low range Nvidia 8 series card :p) within my budget for my gaming needs and i can upgrade that too when needed (or when i have cash :) ).

RC1 was the Release Candidate, which was later optimized and debugged. Man, you really asking wether an Final Release would be better than the RC? Go for the final ASAP, it is gonna be much better than RC1.
