WINDOWS UPDATE doesn't works

Hey friends whenever I tries 2 update my windows it doesn't works.
after downloading ie 6 the sys pretends 2 install it but instead of installing a message appears telling that a previous installation is pending, plz reboot ur sys n restart the setup. I have rebooted several times btu nothing happens.

1. Try Add/Remove Windows Components in Control Panel and unchecked Internet
Explorer. restart computer and try to update.

2. Rename the catroot2 folder in <windir>\system32 to catroot2old. restart and try.

Sfc /purgecache (a black window will come up and close by itself)

Sfc /scannow (will ask for windows xp cd-rom)

Well i don't have win xp btu win98se also don't hav catroot2 folder but do hav catroot folder
what shod i do

Well man no more replies plz help me i'm in real need. don't any1 have solution for win98. n my ie6 isn't opening any site except windows update site. Help me plz.

It is a self-extracting and self-installing pack like Mcft's update files. Thus, you cannot choice files individually. However, the pack installs only required fixes for your system. Uninstallation is possible from Add-Remove Programs.

win98 ..hmm well bro i had heard that MS has withdrawn support for it .....

Well man i'm dead sure abt it.
Windows Update icon is present in Start Menu.
Whenever i clicks it it opens ie6 (installed from digit cd) but during the downloading of the updates it hangs or restarts the system or gimme info that win update has caused an illegal operation. Any help.

Expert No 1 please restrict yourself to answering the question. If you bothered to read his question you would see that he CANNOT reinstall IE... thus the problem. I see posts from you everywhere and none of them really of any help...
