Win Xp - Windows Explorer windo hangs

Everytime I switch to Explorer window or close an open explorer window. It eventually hangs. Clicking taskbar button is ineffective and task manager shows something like Local Disk (drive) Microsoft Internet Explorer - Not responding.
This has started recently. Have tried system restore but no luck. It's Win XP SP3. IE8. Any help would be great. Thx

Its a virus. Do a proper scan in safe mode using a free AV like Avira or Avast. You may also try Malwarebytes AntiMalware and Spybot Search&Destroy

Scan has not helped much
One observation is that it hangs only after expanding MY Computer. If I don't touch MY Computer and just access My documents and close, it does not hang. Also in Safe mode no such hang is observerd no matter what drive / folder I access

Maybe driver related issue then.
Use ccleaner to clean registry and cleanup unused sytem files.
Update all system drivers and Defrag the drive...atleast system partition if not the whole hdd.

If nothing works, retort to reinstall Windows.

windows xp system files issue
use system repair from XP CD..
do sfc scan

also clean junk files/registry
use these Tune Up 2012 & CCleaner

most likely it cud have been xp / driver issue as you suggested.
finally re-installed XP and so far no hangs observed.

Use Ccleaner regularly and also remove unwanted startup items.

Do one thing download customization pack like crystal XP install it see if problem persist. if it doesn't help download malware byte anti malware update and do full system scan.

why to check with crystal XP?Any specific reasons?
